Any creative individual will want to showcase their work in some form on a website. Its purpose can be merely a testing ground for mini projects or act as a platform to gain exposure and client work.
Often when a potential client visits your website, they know nothing about you personally, it is highly likely they will quickly judge your capabilities and personality from what they are presented with on arrival at your portfolio.
I know many designers who are very busy and rarely get a chance to work on their own portfolio, least of all keep it updated.
Unfortunately to an prospective client they will judge you solely based on what they see in your portfolio meaning you are only as good as what your portfolio is displaying.
A potential client who is browsing your site, would be looking to see where you can add value to their product or business needs, if what they see fails to impress them they will quickly bounce of your site and on to another and you will have lost business.
