Tips on Selecting the Best Color Scheme for your Project

Media_httpsupercolort_nkhad

Whether you’re designing a website for a certain up-and-coming personality or just doing some Photoshop or Illustrator projects for kicks, you can never underestimate the power of color schemes in finding the right colors for your project.

There are so many sources for combination of colors for a specific project. For starters, you can just look out of your window and see which colors look good in your eyes and which ones look revolting when combined; nature can be a good source of inspiration. However, there are more sophisticated tools in choosing the right color combinations, like the products offered by Pantone, where you can easily see which colors look good when juxtaposed. But if you are looking for other places to look for color schemes, here are some tips.

Marvel Project Gamma: Comic Books Just Got Their Own Soundtracks

Media_httpimggawkeras_yghgl

Marvel's new Project Gamma is the answer to a pretty simple question: What if comics had their own soundtracks?

Simply, Project Gamma adds music to comics. But not like a standard soundtrack (Marvel calls it "adaptive audio" and compares it to a score, actually). It adds musical elements and occasionally sound effects as you turn panel to panel or page to page, and it does it dynamically, instead of looping the audio. That means that if you flip to the next panel mid-bar, the software will wait to transition until the next bar. It sounds really smooth as you use it, even as you go backwards through panels and the audio is rolled back. There will be two mix types—for panel viewing and full-page—but we didn't get to hear the full page version.

The goal here is to add emotional resonance to comics—the way you tense up when ominous musical cues come up, or swell as the the-hero-is-winning-now notes hit—and to do it at your own pace, without disrupting your reading (which is why none of the music has lyrics). Audio shifts as you move scene to scene, from character to character. A heavier beat might drop as a big fight starts. Ron Perazza, who came onto Marvel for this project, says, "You might see audio cues that are associated with a specific villain foreshadow his appearance later in an issue."

We have seen some pretty awesome projects here featuring religious matters, such as the Bible books posters by Jim LePage, and we find super great when designers get to translate to design their beliefs.

Typeface Design Project

Media_httpprintbenchc_xetgo

This project is born as a response to a concern about how to pull together the essence of the capitularis monumentalis uppercase alphabet with a subtle brush spirit. The aim was to find each sign morphology to combine carving and stroke in a particular way; clever and subtle. In the same way, structures of more traditional ligatures were capitalized, bringing them to a more contemporary style. The development of lowercase letters was taken as part of the challenge as well. Read more for this Typeface Design Project.

EU spends $1.4 billion on flawed, but exciting, brain-in-a-box project

Media_httpwwwextremet_aydao

Big physics has been showered in riches since the World War II era, yet today finds itself in a bit of a crisis as traditional funding priorities are increasingly questioned. While projects like the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) have enjoyed funding closer to $10 billion, projects in the life sciences which would offer tangible benefit to more people have struggled for survival. A man we will be hearing a bit more about in the future, Henry Markram, has just sold the European Union a brain in a box for €1 billion ($1.4 billion). When his ticket comes due in 10 years, there is one thing that can be counted on — someone is going to have some explaining to do.

In a major announcement this week, Europe has funded two new projects, promising over $3 billion in total. One study will be focused on new applications for graphene, while the other, now being described as the Human Brain Project (HBP), seeks nothing less than a simulation of the human brain.

Girl Launches Hello Kitty Doll Into Space For Science Fair Project

Media_httpabcnewsgoco_bdizn

It’s a bird. It’s a plane. No, it’s Hello Kitty.

That’s what a seventh grade student from California had in mind when she came up with her dream science project: sending a Hello Kitty doll her dad brought back from a business trip in Japan into space.

Lauren Rojas, a 12-year-old from Antioch, Calif., got the idea after seeing a television commercial in which a balloon was launched into the sky. She thought she could do the same with her Hello Kitty doll. She would test air pressure and temperature at high altitude for her school’s science fair.

“I said, ‘Wow, are you serious?’” Lauren’s teacher, Annette Cluck of Cornerstone Christian School, told ABCNews.com. “I was kind of blown away because usually students don’t do something that extravagant.”

How to Self-Critique Your Design Projects

Media_httpimagenaldzg_ztinc

Working on a design is not just as simple as putting lines, colors, shapes and type together. It entails creative thinking and deep understanding of a project’s concept. Hence, one has to give his heart to his work and also use his thinking skills really well along with his design skills. So when one is working on a design, he also has to check it for some flaws. It doesn’t mean that just because you have the skill that your work would always turn out perfectly. Humans are imperfect in nature and there really would be little flaws no matter how one tries to work on a perfect design. But with consistent self-critiquing and improvement of work, you will be able to arrive to the design that you wanted to achieve.

Microsoft Has Plans For Its Own Project Glass

Media_httpimggawkeras_nrdai

A patent application published yesterday reveals that Microsoft is sitting on plans for its own version of Google's Project Glass.

Unlike Google's glasses, which seem to be intended for general all-day wear—if you like that kind of thing—Microsoft's patent appears to describe more specific scenarios for use. Indeed, images in the patent depict how the glasses could be used to augment action at live events, like sports games.

The patent application suggests a pair of glasses would throw up text, images and audio on a head-up display—kind of a second screen, just one that's strapped to your face. That means instant replays at the football, subtitled lyrics at concerts, or instant stats when a player walks onto the pitch.

Here's How Many Kickstarter Projects Are Successfully Funded

Media_httpstatic3busi_eebpz

More and more people are posting projects on Kickstarter, hoping to get their business ideas funded by peers.

But that doesn't mean their ideas are finding any more success on the crowdfunding site.
In the past six months, the amount of Kickstarter projects posted has grown 50% to 76,909, GigaOm reports.

Less than half of the projects -- 44% according to a Kickstarter spokesperson -- have successfully meet their monetary goals. And on Kickstarter, it's an all or nothing deal. If posters don't raise the full amount of money they're seeking, they don't see a dime.

When you think about it, 44% is actually a pretty high success rate. The average fundraising on Kickstarter is between $1,000 and $10,000, so it's no small amount of cash that's being swapped between strangers.
