Apple Sets Sights On Microsoft Surface With 128 GB iPad

Media_httpreadwriteco_amjms

Apple announced a new version of its fourth-generation iPad today. Apple’s newest will be a 128 GB version starting at $799 with cellular connectivity at $929 and hits stores on February 5th. With the tablet industry trending towards smaller, cheaper versions, why would Apple buck the trend and release one of the most expensive tablets on the market?

The answer has little to do with Google, Amazon or the Android Army. For Apple, the 128 GB iPad is all about business and enterprise. What company controls the enterprise software market and is releasing its own expensive tablet?

9/11: A Tribute – Eleven Years On

Media_httpnetonextrap_qlnbg

Tuesday, 11th September 2001 started off as any normal day for most people in the world. Of course, some were waking up to greet their birthday or wedding anniversary or with contractions indicating that their baby would enter the world that day, but very, very few people had any idea it would be a day and a date etched on the memory of the world – perhaps even the perpetrators didn't really understand quite what they were creating.

Media_httpenpunditcom_fluqu

London-born artist Stephen Wiltshire is a rare gem in a global mine of unpolished stones. Diagnosed with autism at age three and functionally mute until the age of five, Wiltshire was discovered to have an affinity for drawing, a talent that has proven him as an artistic savant. He has grown into a world-renowned artist with degrees from City and Guilds of London Art School, multiple published books, many international trips to complete commissioned drawings—and in 2006, he was “named by Queen Elizabeth II as a Member of the Order of the British Empire, in recognition of his services to the art world.”

11 Tech Sounds That Will Make You Feel Nostalgic

Media_httpstatic2busi_fsowj

It feels like it was just yesterday when we had to wait an eternity for our dial-up modems to log us on to the Internet.

The lengthy wait to sign-on was always worth it, though, because AOL always made us feel "Welcome" once our 56k modems made the connection.

This feeling of nostalgia hit us after we stumbled upon the Museum of Endangered Sounds, a website which features sounds made by "old technologies and electronics equipment."

Inspired by the museum's mission to preserve these "endangered sounds," we decided to come up with our own list of sounds that we've come to miss.

Our Most Important Memories Live in Just a Few Neurons

Media_httpimggawkeras_erufh

That favorite childhood memory of yours—you know, the one that still seems like just yesterday, the one that you can still smell and taste—may actually be the result of a select few neurons firing deep within your brain.

According to a recent MIT study, Strong memory fragments known as engrams may actually be the result of a small number of neurons residing in the hippocampus, the brain's memory center. The team employed a technique known as optogenetics—one that electrically stimulates genetically-modified neurons that are designed to light up when active—to identify in mice the neurons responsible for long term memories. "We demonstrate that behavior based on high-level cognition, such as the expression of a specific memory, can be generated in a mammal by highly specific physical activation of a specific small subpopulation of brain cells, in this case by light," says Susumu Tonegawa, a researcher at MIT.

The 5 Ways to Make Yourself Memorable

Media_httpwwwopenforu_vbbai

The formula to marketing success? Being memorable. Throughout our lives we constantly encounter many people from many walks of lifes. Often though, we only remember a select few of those folks.

Why are some more memorable than others? Why were they more interesting and seemingly more distinguished from the countless others you spoke with that day? The answer is relatively simple: they planted the seeds in your mind that made them take root in your memory. That is some powerful stuff, because if you too can make people remember you, you will stand out by default. And it’s the stand outs who garner all the business.

Even though I remember a lot of my dreams, I tend to get hung up on the ones I don’t remember. I’ll sit up in my bed, trying my best to remember what I dreamt before it fades away. Sometimes I’m able to recall parts of the dream, but as much as I try, I just can’t remember all of it.

Watch Apple's Steve Jobs Memorial Celebration Video

Media_httpallthingsdc_lniit

Last Wednesday Apple held a company-wide memorial for its late co-founder Steve Jobs at which CEO Tim Cook, former Vice President and Apple board member Al Gore, and Jonny Ive, Apple’s head of design, all spoke. It was a moving celebration, I’m told and today the company decided to share it with the world, posting a video recording of the event to the Apple.com Web site. Certainly worth a watch for anyone interested in Jobs, his legacy and his breadth of vision, so eloquently described by Ive in his memorial speech.

Media_https3guyismcom_dxeig

Remember when you and a buddy used to run down to the local arcade with a pocket full of quarters? Yes, that’s right, you youngsters out there, there used to be establishments filled with nothing but big, boxy things that housed monitors that you put a quarter in so you could play a game for 5 to 10 minutes.
