It was a poorly kept secret to begin with, but now it has finally been revealed: Intel is indeed developing an Internet TV service, and a set-top box to boot.

Speaking at D: Dive Into Media Tuesday, Erik Huggers, corporate vice president at Intel Media, confirmed rumors that have been circulating for months.

“We have been working for about a year now to set up a group called Intel Media,” Huggers said “It’s a new division with new people — people [we've hired] from Apple, Netflix and Google. And it’s devoted to developing an Internet television platform.”

That group’s mandate: Build the best Internet television service ever.

Intel CEO Paul Otellini to Retire in May

Chipmaker Intel just announced that CEO Paul Otellini, who has been on the job for eight years, will be retiring in May. A successor has not been named.

People are going to wonder if Intel’s board is forcing Otellini out. They’ll point to Intel’s mandatory retirement age of 65. Otellini is only 62, and his predecessor Craig Barrett retired from the CEO job at 65 or 66. But apparently there’s no hard-and-fast rule at Intel. The legendary Andy Grove, the company’s third employee, served as its CEO from 1987 until 1997, retiring closer to age 61.

But the bigger problems stem from the emergence of a fundamentally new computing environment over the last five years. When Otellini was promoted into the CEO job in 2005, Intel essentially set much of the computing industry’s agenda.

First Intel-powered smartphone launches

The first smartphone powered by Intel-designed microprocessors is going on sale, just as the world’s biggest chipmaker launches a third generation of Core microprocessors that it intends will defend its PC territory from mobile competitors.

The Xolo X900 from the little-known Lava handset maker is available in India from today for around $423. It represents Intel’s attempt at a breakthrough into a phone world dominated by chips based on designs of the U.K.’s Arm.

Intel Capital: Invests $100 Million In Its new Intel Capital Connected Car Fund

Intel Capital announced today a $100 million fund devoted to cars.

So what's a chip company doing betting on technology in cars?

Intel estimates that by 2014, cars will be one of the top three fastest-growing markets for connected devices and Internet content. That eventually gives Intel an opportunity to put more of its chips in a whole new place: cars.

As an Intel manager put it in the press release announcing the fund: "The car is the ultimate mobile device."

Intel revenue tops $14 billion for first time

The world's largest chipmaker reported revenue of $14.2 billion on a GAAP (generally accepted accounting principles) basis, on GAAP earnings of 65 cents per share. Adjusted income was 69 cents per share. This compares to $11.1 billion in revenue in the year-earlier period, or 52 cents a share.

Intel has been busily promoting the Ultrabook as an inexpensive Windows ultraportable laptop that will start at under $1,000. Well, Acer delivered on that promise today with the Aspire S3 that starts at $899.99.

The S3 is truly thin and light, not like the faux "ultrathins" of years past. The 13.3-inch chassis is 0.51 inches thick and weighs 2.98 pounds. That's very close to the more expensive--at $1,299--MacBook Air, which is 0.68-inches thick and weighs 2.96 pounds.
