WATCH: The 5 Best Viral Videos of November

Goodbye Thanksgiving, and hello holiday season. As we flip the calendar to December, let’s give thanks for a month that brought us new music by the folks behind Rebecca Black’s “Friday,” the five Harvard students who launched a burger into the great beyond and a convincing explanation for why MTV doesn’t play music videos anymore. These and more are our favorite viral clips of the month.

While you probably don’t need a calendar to tell you that Christmas comes after Thanksgiving, 12-year-old singer Nicole Westbrook thought we, as a society, could use a bit of help. She released “It’s Thanksgiving” earlier this month, her first foray into the world of music. If this bubblegummy ode to turkey and stuffing sounds familiar, it’s because it sprang from the mind of Patrice Wilson, the same impresario who brought us Rebecca Black’s gloriously bad 2011 tune “Friday.” And Westbrook has clearly chosen the seat right behind Rebecca Black’s. While her song didn’t make quite as many waves – or annoy as many YouTube users – it still managed to give us some comedic relief from the holiday craziness.

How Do Computers Understand Speech?

Media_httpimggawkeras_awhia

More and more, we can get computers to do things for us by talking to them. A computer can call your mother when you tell it to, find you a pizza place when you ask for one, or write out an email that you dictate. Sometimes the computer gets it wrong, but a lot of the time it gets it right, which is amazing when you think about what a computer has to do to turn human speech into written words: turn tiny changes in air pressure into language.

Computer speech recognition is very complicated and has a long history of development, but here, condensed for you, are the seven basic things a computer has to do to understand speech.
If you thought Siri had an easy gig, think again. Mental Floss breaks down just how hard it is for computers to understand what we say—and to turn that into written words.

It Happened To Me: My Small Business Was Hacked!

Media_httpreadwriteco_gccdl

Last September, shortly after the attacks on the U.S. diplomatic compound in Benghazi, a company tweeted me that they were going to make our site, SmallBizDaily.com, their “small business resource of the day.” My joy was short-lived when the next morning they tweeted that my site had been hacked.

I quickly checked (it was still early morning on the West Coast, where we’re located) and sure enough, instead of the usual array of small-business content I was greeted by an unfamiliar image of a Middle Eastern-looking man, Arabic lettering and a video about the glories of Allah. I blinked, gulped more caffeine and reloaded the page. No luck — the image was still there. “We’ve been hacked,” I muttered, still not believing what I was seeing.

Creative portrait photography by Vilde Indrehus

Media_httpfarm9static_ricyd

"I am a 17 year old girl from Norway. I have been serious about photography for about a year now, and I am addicted. It’s weird how an interest can turn your life upside down. From the moment I really got into this medium, I started seeing things from a whole different perspective. The things that no one else notices are the things that I love the most: a graveyard, rain, garbage and clouds are examples of things that inspire me. Especially clouds! Everything is so damn beautiful. I want to photograph everything I see. And when I say everything, I totally mean it. I love how photography makes me see this world just as beautiful as it is. And it somehow confuses me that I’m the only one I know that think of it that way." ~ Vilde Indrehus

Watch Reddit's Founders Describe How the Site Was Born

Media_httpimggawkeras_jbaxb

These days Reddit is an internet behemoth that shapes opinion and rapidly spreads news, but sometimes it's easy to forget that it only started up in 2005. In this video, founders Steve Huffman and Alexis Ohanian explain how the site was born.

You might have heard snippets of the story before—like that fact that it was born out of a failed start-up idea, or that Huffman and Ohanian used fake accounts to fuel the site in the early days—but it's fascinating to listen to the pair talk about the history of the site. The story stretches from their first meeting at college right the way up to present day, and it's well worth ten minutes of your time.

Unlocked iPhone 5 now available from the U.S. Apple Store

Media_httpwwwtechnolo_mmmso
via www.gadgetell.com">technologytell.com

Finally, the iPhone 5 is up for grabs from the U.S. Apple Online Store. Although this comes a bit late especially since some carrier-issued iPhone 5 units were supposed to be unlocked anyway, this is still a welcome development if you are planning to upgrade to the iPhone 5 and don’t want to get tangled up with a two-year contract from either Sprint, Verizon and AT&T. Or if you travel a lot, the unlocked iPhone 5 comes off as a hassle-free device since you can insert a nano-SIM from any local telco providers and use the handset right away. This is also a great news for non-U.S. folks who are itching to get the iPhone 5, either to get it shipped via forwarders or have somebody from the U.S. ship the unit on their behalf. Believe me, folks in Manila, Philippines will surely take advantage of this scheme since it will be a lot cheaper than getting it from online Apple Stores in Hong Kong or Singapore. And how much is the unlocked iPhone anyway? The 16GB, 32GB and 64GB iPhone 5 in their unlocked state are being sold for $649, $749 and $849. Apple promises to deliver the units in one weeks time.

Design Tips and Inspiration from the Work of Saul Bass

Not only did he design the unforgettable title sequences for such films as Vertigo, Psycho and Goodfellas, he came up with the logos for such companies and organizations as Geffen Records, United Airlines, the Boys and Girls Club of America and AT&T. Christian Annyas calculates that a Saul Bass logo has an average lifespan of thirty-four years. With such a figure in mind, ambitious graphic designers would do well to study Bass’s work and take away these lessons.

Inside Obama's Meeting with Entrepreneurs on the Fiscal Cliff

Media_httpwwwinccomup_jnadx

When entrepreneur and Inc. 30 Under 30 alum Nikhil Arora received an email from the White House last Thursday to attend a small business meeting, he didn’t know exactly what to expect or even who from the Obama administration would be present.

He said it was only “one or two days” before the now highly publicized meeting took place Tuesday that he found out President Obama himself would lead a conversation on how to avoid the impending fiscal cliff with a group of 15 entrepreneurs.

“I didn’t expect that level of engagement from the administration,” said the co-founder of Back to the Roots, a company that makes mushroom growing kits from recycled coffee grounds. “This was not a presentation, it was an active back-and-forth discussion.”

Does Microsoft Dare Build Its Own Smartphone?

Media_httpreadwriteco_gyuaa

Microsoft has long been a company that relies on its manufacturing partners to spread its Windows operating system. That has been true for Microsoft’s mobile efforts as well, partnering with companies like Samsung, HTC and Nokia for its Windows Mobile CE and Windows Phone platforms. So when Microsoft decided to build its own Windows 8 tablet - the Surface - speculation increased that the company would take a similar route and build its own smartphone. Would Microsoft really be willing to jeapordize its strong ties to its smarpthone partners, like Nokia, and dare to enter the market on its own?

The answer, according to Taiwanese news site DigiTimes, is yes. According to DigiTimes sources, both Amazon and Microsoft have placed orders with Chinese gadget manufacturer Foxconn International Holdings (the same company that builds the iPhone for Apple) for small batches of their own smartphones to be shipped in the middle of 2013.

It is important to note that, as far as smartphone rumors are concerned, DigiTimes is not always to be trusted. The publication has long been a source of unsubstantiated rumors that light fires under hype cycles for new devices, especially those from Apple like the iPad and iPhone. But for a number of reasons, I'm not ready to completely ignore this rumor.

Among the early bunch was Marissa Mayer, a young computer science graduate from Stanford. 7 Resources New Freelancers Can Use to Figure Out What to Charge

Media_httpfreelancesw_nhagp

It’s possibly the most baffling question that faces new freelancers: What in the heck am I supposed to charge for my work?

You don’t have a sense of market rates yet. Your prospect doesn’t want to tell you their budget. Figuring out what to charge for your freelance services is intimidating.

If you’ve been freelancing for content mills, or on bidding sites, or responding to Craigslist ads, you’ve probably seen loads of offers at rates that wouldn’t support a hamster. It’s confusing to know what fees are appropriate for what type of gig.

You don’t want to bid too low and essentially rip yourself off. But you don’t want to bid too high and lose the gig, either.

10 Vital Elements Of A Perfect Infographic Design [Infographic]

Infographics are specifically designed to present information in a way that makes it easy for the viewer or reader to quickly understand what the presentation is all about. An infographic is so much more than an image with information presented on it. It is actually a tool to simplify education and optimize the time it takes to learn. However, infographic design is anything but easy, and we have seen examples of great information presented on bad infographics more times than I want to remember.

Make Sure You Do These 4 Things Before You Build A Product

Wouldn’t it be nice to know the demands of your product before you even launch? It would save you time, money, and a lot of guesswork.

The problem is that too many entrepreneurs are stuck with data that supports building a business, but not necessarily their business. They don’t know if their solution is something people want until it hits the market. Fortunately, there’s a way to find out demand for a product before launch.

But before we get into that, let’s discuss the systems that entrepreneurs currently employ to determine if they should build a business:

Market size and trends
Amount of competitors in a geographic region
Study demographics to determine if their product will fit

Should our smartphones have more individuality?

Media_httpwwwtechnolo_biuma

We may be in the golden age of smart phones right now. Multi-core processors and high resolution screens abound. Silly debates are now settled by asking Siri or Google Voice Search. Once satisfied with basic portals to the web, we now demand these devices to be personal assistants. This is utility that we could’ve only imagined a few years ago.

What about design? Have our smartphones, with all of their power, become boring slabs of metal and plastic ? We enjoy individuality as human beings. People wear designer handbags and jackets. Others landscape their properties or paint their interiors in wild colors. Why don’t we demand more from phone manufacturers?
