Successful Businesses: 9 Most Important Elements

Media_httpwwwinccomup_mffii

It used to be that start-ups began with the “entrepreneur’s vision,” which was usually a highly product-centric idea for a company. Only much later--and after much agonizing--would the founder discover the idea itself didn’t amount to a complete business model.

That era in start-ups is over. Or at least it should be.

Using the Customer Development process along with the business model canvas first developed by Alexander Osterwalder, it’s possible to assemble a far more detailed version of your “vision” that includes the nine most important elements of any successful business (we’ll get to what those are below). With that in hand, you can validate your vision with the only possible “validators”--your potential customers. As customers applaud or pan elements of the business model, you iterate the model and pivot over time based on that feedback. The constantly updated business model becomes a “scorecard” for monitoring progress as you go through the Customer Discovery phase.

White Walls Artistically Transformed with Black Markers

Media_httpapiningcom8_iupnb

Sometimes finding the right piece of art to hang on your wall can be difficult. Once that first painting is tacked on, there's the added pressure to fill the adjacent walls with complementing work to balance out the room. British artist Charlotte Mann, however, takes an alternative approach to adorning walls with art—she draws directly onto them with thick black markers.

The sharp black lines are in direct contrast to the vast, milky white background Mann tends to work on. It's like crossing over into a comic book world! Mann's expertly detailed illustrations add a sense of life and often exude a feeling of comfort found in one's own cluttered home. While the drawn figures take up no extending physical space beyond the confines of the wall itself, they enhance the room's homey aura with their depictions of clothes and books strewn about. In real life, this scene could be maddening, but on a two-dimensional plane it works brilliantly.

Mind-Controlled Videogames Become Reality

Media_httpsiwsjnetpub_giili

This mind-power trick may seem far-fetched, like something from a late-night science fiction movie or the back of an old comic book. But several companies are bringing this technology to life with affordable headsets that determine a person's state of mind.

The gadgets translate brain waves into digital information and beam it wirelessly to computers or other devices.

So far the headsets are confined to mostly digital interfaces—videogames and movies whose plots can be altered with the mind—although in some cases real-world objects have been used, like a pair of catlike ears that move depending on a person's mood. The technology, still in its infancy, has the potential to not only entertain but to possibly improve education and strengthen mental health, some doctors say.

This Is What The Next iPhone Will Supposedly Look Like

Media_httpstatic6busi_wbnqs

The photo below is supposedly what the next iPhone is going to look like.

As you can see, it's a lot like the current iPhone, but just a little bit bigger, a little bit thinner, and it has a different casing. The back of it is an aluminum material with color panels on the top and bottom.

As with any Apple hardware leak, you should treat this with a healthy dose of skepticism.

These images come from 9 to 5 Mac's Mark Gurman, who got the photos from "supply chain sources." He has more images at 9 to 5 Mac.

This could be what the next iPhone looks like, or it could just be a fake. Before the last iPhone was released we saw a bunch of iPhone cases that were supposedly made for the iPhone 5. Turned out they weren't real.

Dell begins test deployment of ARM-based Copper servers

Copper is lower power than x86 servers, and Dell thinks this makes it a good fit for energy-intensive platforms such as Hadoop. In that same vein, the company views Copper as a cost-effective option that can be used for light workloads and for testing performance. In addition to deploying its new servers to select clients, Dell will be looking to the open source community for help in further developing its ARM system (the platform currently runs Linux). No word on when Copper will move beyond the testing phase.

Norm Brodsky's Most Important Rule of Business

Media_httpwwwinccomup_ewipv

There's a funny thing about entrepreneurs: They're often way too optimistic about sales and way too pessimistic about prices.

I've witnessed this phenomenon many times over the years, most recently in two women with whom I've been working. A few months ago, Carey Balogh and Julia Dawson opened a play space for kids near my home in Brooklyn, New York. It's called Frolic, and it offers classes, birthday parties, a boutique, a coffee lounge, and a play area, all with a rock 'n' roll theme. It's a great concept, and it will be very successful, I'm sure. But first, Carey and Julia need to learn that business decisions must be guided by numbers, not emotions.

When Carey and Julia come to see me, they're always bubbling with excitement. They can't wait to tell me how well things are going—how many members have signed up, what new offerings they're considering, the great publicity they're getting. Then we go through the numbers and discover that they're not yet breaking even. They're losing money every week. "You have to make some changes," I told them recently. "If you don't, you'll run through your capital and be left with two choices."
