Media_httprack2mshcdn_zbibh

For those who frequently use the free public Wi-Fi in coffee shops such as Starbucks and Dunkin' Donuts, you're likely already aware of how easy it is for hackers to steal your personal and financial information over the shared network.

But what you may not realize is how cybercriminals could gain access to sensitive data in other ways that might not be on your radar.

This allows them to retrieve personal information and even social network passwords. Although this may seem unlikely, ThreatMetrix says the scenario actually occurs...

Importance of wireframing in Graphic Design

Media_httpwwwauroveco_iejpd

Wireframing is the most important part of the web designing concept without which the designing of an attractive and purposeful website is impossible. Many web designers do not laid emphasis on this step of web designing and skip this major phase which unbalances overall functionality of a website after the completion of final design. Wireframing is an important concept of web designing which gives an overall view of the proposed web designing model and helps in converting information architecture directly into an appropriate design.

Google Glass Has Already Been Hacked By Jailbreakers

Media_httpbiforbesimg_evmdi

With a name like Glass, it was just asking to be cracked.

Just days after its release to developers, Google’s Glass headset has already been hacked to give users full control of its Android operating system, according to Jay Freeman, a well-known Android and iOS developer who tested a known exploit for Android on Glass yesterday and announced his success on Twitter Friday afternoon. The “root” or “jailbreak” technique Freeman found would potentially remove any restrictions Google might place on Glass, though it’s not yet clear exactly what those restrictions might be in consumer versions of the device...

How To Redesign a Logo

Media_httpibrandstudi_lijft

Personally, I think that people use too frequently terms as branding and rebranding, redesign, or brand identity. In this context, each one has an opinion; the multitude of viewpoints is welcomed but these must be based on a solid background which is not the case for the majority of individuals. My idea has at its foundation the huge numbers of clients that misuse the branding and logo design vocabulary. Yep, we should be tolerant and forgive the incorrect use of some terms but we can’t ignore when wrong ideas are strongly advocated. More concrete, a very good friend of mine told me about a client that asked for a logo redesign because it’s more than a year since it wasn’t modified. Well, just because time passes, it isn’t a valid reason to redesign a logo!

Newly-discovered lithium reserve could satisfy US demand for hundreds of years

Media_httpcdn0sbnatio_bpsfj

Researchers at the University of Wyoming have discovered a new lithium reserve that could radically alter where the US sources a key component of the li-ion batteries used in consumer electronics, electric vehicles, and other technology. New legislature would do away with tax-free online shopping

Media_httpicdn6digita_wngih

Say goodbye to tax-free shopping! Yesterday, the Senate voted for a bill that if legalized, will take away a nice perk we’ve all taken for granted while shopping online. This bill is called the Marketplace Fairness Act, which would force online retailers to tack on a sales tax for all online purchases. The bill will be voted on in the Senate for a final time on May 6.

The bill would change a 1992 law that didn’t require online-only retailers to pay a sales tax in states that require retailers to charge a sales tax unless this retailer had a brick and mortar store in the United States. Right now, how online shopping works is that if you’re shopping for something on BestBuy.com and Best Buy has a physical shop in your state, you’ve had to pay your state’s sales tax. However, if you bought something from Etsy, and the seller didn’t have a brick-and-mortar location, you didn’t have to pay the tax. If the proposed legislature passes, you will start paying that tax. With this bill, the state you live in will collect taxes for everything you buy online.

Efficient Web Design - One Page Websites Inspiration

Media_httpwwwdesignre_cghqc

For one page websites scrolling is the solution to see more content, differently from regular websites where you click on a button that gets you on a page, then another one and if you are not focused and the site is not well structured, you can get lost in all the details that the pages have.

This is different with one page websites. Mostly being landing pages, information is not complex, instead they just have a few blocks of text, even fewer images, maybe a video and that’s it.

But what about designing a site like this? How would you do it? Most of the times, you can make them scroll vertically, but there are designers who decide to make things a little bit more interesting and make the websites scroll horizontally.

Trash to Treasure: 40 Creative Recycled and Repurposed Artworks

Media_httpinspiration_xejod

As the saying goes, “one man’s trash is another man’s treasure.” The talented artists, behind the works you’re about to see, view the world differently. They see incredible possibility in the junk we blindly throw away on a daily basis. Not only do they contribute art for us, but to the world itself. Thanks to the integration of recyclable items, their artwork actually spares items that would end up in the landfill.

Sometimes I get depressed about how we’re treating this Planet. We constantly contribute to the ongoing pollution by dumping non-biodegradable waste and toxic chemicals. This lazy approach can’t be good for our future generations. I’m sure people in 3013 will think that we were a bunch of uneducated and uninformed idiots trashing the planet like it was our frat house basement. Many people want to use the “everybody else is doing it,” and “I can’t make a difference anyway” excuses. But quite frankly that’s a bunch of BS. Doing something about the problems our world faces, instead of tuning out, shows character...

Why Facebook is blue: The science of colors in marketing

Media_httpblogbuffera_gehbe

Why is Facebook blue? According to The New Yorker, the reason is simple. It’s because Mark Zuckerberg is red-green colorblind. This means that blue is the color Mark can see the best. In his own words Zuck says:

“Blue is the richest color for me I can see all of blue.”

Not highly scientific right? Well, although in the case of Facebook, that isn’t the case, there are some amazing examples of how colors actually affect our purchasing decisions.

After all, the visual sense is the strongest developed one in most human beings. It’s only natural that 90% of an assessment for trying out a product is made by color alone...

The Importance Of Good Business Card Design With Examples

Media_httpwwwdesignyo_gjouo

A person’s business card can be considered one of the most important marketing tools that he has. With it, you are giving you contact information to potential clients or existing customers to make them loyal. In order for the business card to do its desired job, it must be professional, attractive and memorable.

This can be certainty if you make sure you follow a set of rules. For starters, your logo must be simple and symbolic to your company’s services and the industry that is associated with. Placing your website and email is a must. People will be searching for a website where to look for more information about you and your business and also for an email if they want to contact you. If you’re missing these two, you would better keep the cards to yourself, cause handing them to people would be useless.

iTunes Store at 10: how Apple built a digital media juggernaut

Media_httpassetssbnat_iwesd

Ten years ago this month, a music sector ravaged by Napster and largely ignorant of digital distribution found a savior of sorts in what was then called the iTunes Music Store. With its 99-cent unbundled songs, the service quickly became the only significant source for acquiring music legally online.

With iTunes, Apple had drawn the blueprint for distributing music, movies, books, and apps over the web. By supplying and tying together a music player, online store, and song-mangement software, Apple drastically simplified the entire music experience, defying the odds to build a music-retailing dynasty even as file sharing skyrocketed. A decade ago, Apple started to answer what would become an all-important question: how do you get consumers to pay for content again?

"They invented the digital music business," said Michael Nash, the former digital chief at Warner Music Group. "Apple really created the convergence of music and technology and showed everyone what the connected economy around content looks like."...

Either way, it's nothing to feel ashamed about. The web is a dangerous place and even the most tech savvy users sometimes slip up. You can even get a virus through no fault of your own simply by visiting a reputable website that, unbeknownst to you, has been compromised by a hacker with malicious intent. Strong smartphone sales boost Samsung to $7.9 billion profit in Q1 2013

Media_httpcdn2sbnatio_yioay

Samsung Electronics made an operating profit of 8.78 trillion won ($7.9 billion) in the first quarter of 2013, matching its guidance and representing a more than 50 percent improvement on its performance last year. Revenues were 52.87 trillion won ($47.6 billion), and net profit was 7.15 trillion won ($6.45 billion). The company said strong smartphone sales coupled with reduced marketing expenses helped boost its IT & Mobile Communications division to revenues of 32.82 trillion alone. However, Samsung's revenues were hit by seasonality — the company took in 6 percent less cash than in the previous quarter — and what it describes as a sluggish economy that meant lower TV and home appliance sales.

14-Year-Old Photographer's Amazingly Surreal Self Portraits

Media_httpapiningcom8_bqmij

We're always big fans of up-and-coming teen photographers here on My Modern Met, but 14-year-old photographer Zev (aka fiddle oak) has got to be one of the youngest talents we've ever come across. The Natick, Massachusetts-based teen photographer's portfolio exhibits skills beyond his years.

Zev manages to present a variety of techniques in his collection of images that lean towards the surreal in his self-portraits, which also overlap with his ongoing Little Folk series. A common theme in these works is to play with size ratio. By shrinking himself down for his imaginative photos, Zev takes the viewer along on a magical journey of rediscovering the world around us where blades of grass stand at equal height, a leaf can be used as an umbrella, and an acorn makes a suitable seat. His self-portraits also show just how young he is, making it all the more astounding that he's capable of producing such quality pictures.

People are shocked that Nintendo is not going to have a press conference at the biggest video gaming show of the year, E3, in June.

"Wow. no nintendo press conference at this year's e3. that's ... ceding a lot of oxygen to the competition," Arthur Gies, a video game reviewer, tweeted yesterday.

It's surprising because Nintendo's sales figures for the Wii U were pretty disappointing.

"Now this is a bad earnings report," influential tech blogger John Gruber recently wrote. "Really hope Nintendo figures a way to pull itself out of this spiral."

The gaming company sold 3.45 million Wii U consoles by the end of March, missing its target of 4 million units. But it expects new games to increase the sales of the Wii U to 9 million this fiscal year...

A deeper look into lasers, particle beams, and the future of war

Media_httpwwwextremet_ahtjk

We previously looked at the logic behind and general impediments to the use of energy weapons on the battlefield. Beam weapons have developed slowly, as much due to understandable public skepticism as technological limitations. We’ve seen that range is a continuing issue for beam weapons (as is traveling through a gas) and that satellites that kill other satellites are quite possible, while satellites that fire through ozone and several kilometers of air to kill tanks on the Earth’s surface are less likely. Similarly, while the technology needed to create killer energy weapons — like particle beams — exists and seems feasible, it’s just as impractical as lasers for miniaturization and personal deployment.

And you thought being a software engineer was all about dreaming up clever algorithms or amazing graphics routines and then instantiating them in elegant, tightly written code. Shows what you know.

It turns out, at least according to a survey conducted by software delivery service Electric Cloud, that developers spend almost 20% of their time... waiting. Waiting for their code to compile (that is, for it to be translated from a programming language like Python or C into a binary machine language computers can execute). Waiting for test routines to finish running. Waiting for that junior developer to get back with the Diet Coke and Funyons...
