Internet TV is our (near) future

Media_httpcdntechicom_fayjz

Television is one of the most popular forms of entertainment in the world, if not the most popular. Billions of hours of television are watched around the world every day. However, as much as people love television, they don’t love how complex and inconvenient the linear television experience is...

Media_httprack2mshcdn_vddgi

Robot Combat League, Syfy's new reality series pitting 12 expensive, 8-feet-tall humanoid machines against each other in tournament-style face-offs, ends Tuesday night with the final two robots. And while this season lasted only three months, it has been years in the making.

"I really couldn't believe how technologically advacnced they were," Chris Jericho, the show's host and popular WWE wrestler, told Mashable. "It's like being attacked by a Terminator. If you got hit by one of these things it would literally cave your head in."...

Dish Bid For Sprint Could Revolutionize The Cable-Media-Telecom Industry

Media_httpstatic4busi_negaa

In a surprise move, satellite-TV operator Dish Network has made a $26 billion bid for Sprint, the U.S.'s third-largest wireless operator.

Sprint is already in the approval process to sell a majority stake to Japanese telecommunications firm Softbank.

Dish's bid is higher than Softbank's and may therefore trigger a bidding war between the two suitors.

Dish has offered about $7 a share for Sprint, with a mix of cash ($4.74 per share) and $2.26-worth of Dish stock. Dish's stock fell about 5% on the news, and the total value of the offer will continue to fluctuate based on Dish's stock price. Dish estimated that the initial offer was worth about 13% more than Softbank's offer.

Apple IS Working On A TV, And It Could Be Ready By Year End

Media_httpstatic4busi_bljla

Apple is still working on a TV, and it could be ready by the end of this year, though it's more likely to come at the start of 2014, say DigiTimes reporters Julian Ho and Alex Wolfgram.

According to their "industry supply chain sources" the TV "is likely" to support Ultra HD, or 4K, which is the next generation of high definition. They also hear it will have voice and motion controls.

Previously, Peter Misek at Jefferies reported Apple was looking to get TV panels that are close to 4K quality without the 4K cost.

This Is The Future Of TV

Rich Greenfield, the BTIG analyst who’s something of a digital media oracle, isn’t exaggerating when he says, “The future of television has begun” (registration required). Click play on the video above for a brief tour of what has him so excited.

The service is Time Warner Cable’s new application for Roku set-top boxes. It allows TWC subscribers to view live and on-demand programming on any screen with a Roku connected to it. If that didn’t exactly blow your mind, here’s why it should:

∙ In the future of television, the set-top box is king. Screens will be increasingly plentiful, and turning them into full-fledged internet and media devices—what we used to call “computers”—is already pretty easy. Small set-top devices like the brand-new Roku 3, which costs $99, are all you need to get programming onto a television screen.

That’s why people increasingly think Apple’s much-anticipated “television” will actually be two products: a high-resolution screen and a set-top box similar to the existing Apple TV. Then the question is simply, what is the set-top box capable of doing? And, obviously, playing television shows is just a small part of the answer to that question.

YouTube iOS App Now Beams Video to Your TV

Media_httpimggawkeras_foioq

YouTube's iOS app has been updated with the "send to TV" feature that lets you beam videos wirelessly to your television from your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch.

Here's how it works: Make sure your TV and your iOS device are on the same Wi-Fi network, then tap the TV icon at the top of your screen to sling the video. From there, you can control playback or pick something different to watch and everyone with an iOS device on the network can join in to create playlists, too. See how it works here. But more importantly, you can pair with your PS3 or Xbox though, you need to do so manually.

This Apple TV Concept Video Raises A Big Question About The Very Idea Of An Apple TV

Thanks to countless reports from analysts and others, we've all been expecting an Apple TV for a while now.

These days, Apple shareholders in particular would love to see one come out.

The smartphone market is pretty saturated now, and Apple needs another category to dominate.

But maybe we should all temper our enthusiasm.

A Russian Apple blogger just made a showing off his concept for an Apple TV. (A French Apple blogger spotted it.)

Yes, Intel Is Building a Web TV Service (A Box, Too)

It was a poorly kept secret to begin with, but now it has finally been revealed: Intel is indeed developing an Internet TV service, and a set-top box to boot.

Speaking at D: Dive Into Media Tuesday, Erik Huggers, corporate vice president at Intel Media, confirmed rumors that have been circulating for months.

“We have been working for about a year now to set up a group called Intel Media,” Huggers said “It’s a new division with new people — people [we've hired] from Apple, Netflix and Google. And it’s devoted to developing an Internet television platform.”

That group’s mandate: Build the best Internet television service ever.

4K Ultra HD may fill the void that 3D never could

Media_httpcdntechicom_hzxis

Two years ago, 3D televisions and computer displays were going to be the technological advancement that changed the game. It didn’t. If flopped. It went from being a huge part of CES 2011 to a no-show at CES 2013.

The “next big thing” that did make a stout appearance at CES 2013 was 4K Ultra HD. Several companies put their latest display technology front and center at the show, boasting of four times the visual quality of 1080P HD. If the video below and article by Matt Buchanan at Buzzfeed are true, this game changer might actually change the game… for real this time.

Let's talk about 4K televisions

Media_httpwwwtechnolo_kzglr
via www.gadgetell.com">technologytell.com

Every CES has an unofficial theme. These themes are born from companies that want to prove their cutting edge products are better than the competition. This year, 4K televisions were a central part of the show. Sony couldn’t stop gloating about its 4K TVs during its press conference, and Samsung took much pride in unveiling its 110-inch Ultra HD television. While seeing these televisions in person is a sight to behold, I can’t help but feel televisions like these are dead on arrival.

5 Ways TV Will Evolve in 2013

Media_httpreadwriteco_xwbln

If you were expecting the Internet to upend TV like it mangled the print media business, you may have noticed by now that things aren't so simple.

The Web is very good at delivering text and static images, but when it comes to TV-quality video content, it turns out that cable providers are still much better at that. Internet TV has two serious handicaps: content and the user interface. In 2012, the status quo crept forward in both areas, albeit slowly. Next year, TV will continue its gradual evolution toward something completely different from what we grew up with.

A 40-Inch 1080p HDTV Is Your Under-$300 Deal of the Day

Media_httpimggawkeras_ygbvr

When somebody admits to you that they don't own a TV, they're usually being an elitist, condescending jerk. Here's how you defuse the vocal no-TV crowd: play naive and simply assume they haven't checked TV prices in a while and they think flat screens are still thousands and thousands of dollars. Then helpfully point them to this 40-inch large, full 1080p HDTV from Amazon that costs only $270 with free shipping. Tell 'em that even if they don't want to watch broadcast television, this Sceptre set features three HDMI ports for computers, streaming set-top boxes, and game consoles. Plus, if your TV-less friend says something silly like "I just want to watch [INSERT HOME NFL TEAM HERE]" you can tell him all he has to do is plug in an antenna. And when he still refuses to see your pro-big-screen point, buy this TV for yourself and laugh when he's still watching Netflix on his laptop.
