Two Rats Communicate Brain to Brain

Media_httpstaticddmcd_eiose

It's not quite telepathy, but it's the closest anyone has ever come to getting a mammal to read another mammal's mind.

A research team led by neurobiologist Miguel Nicolelis of Duke University has wired together the brains of two rats, allowing them transmit information between each other and cooperate.

The results, detailed in the journal Scientific Reports, could help improve the design of neural-controlled prosthetic devices. And perhaps more than that, they also show that one day we could network brains as well as computers, or communicate by translating neural activity in the brain into electronic signals.

Vimeo introduces 'Looks,' gives users access to over 500 'Hollywood-style' effects

Media_httpcdn1sbnatio_efpnx

The user-uploaded videos you find at Vimeo are typically a hair more polished than your average YouTube clip, but that doesn't mean the company is averse to embracing the filters trend. In fact, that's exactly what it's doing today with the rollout of Looks, a new addition to the site's Enhancer toolset that offers over 500 visual effects users can add to their projects. Everything is done directly within the web browser, and you're able to preview each effect in realtime before deciding if it's the right match. With the overwhelming number of options, Vimeo has helpfully categorized Looks by genre and mood to help filmmakers quickly excise effects that aren't likely to fit. Perhaps most intriguing, the video site can also choose a Look automatically "based on technical analysis of the user's video and social data." Vimeo plans to roll out Looks, made possible through a partnership with Vivoom, to registered users within the next 90 days.

BlackBerry exec allegedly confirms a new BB10 tablet will launch in 2013

Media_httpwwwblogcdnc_hwfec

The company formerly known as RIM is currently rolling out two devices running the new BlackBerry 10 OS, and apparently that's not all it's got in store for 2013. Know Your Mobile India reportedly heard from the Head of Developer Relations for Asia Pacific at BlackBerry, during the recent Z10 launch in India, that a "BB10 tablet is definitely coming later this year." We already knew that BB10 was to be shoehorned onto the PlayBook, and the same exec confirmed that it's still in the works, so your old slate won't be left with outdated software when this new hardware arrives. We've reached out to BlackBerry for confirmation or comment, and will update you when we hear back.

Facebook buys Microsoft ad platform Atlas

Media_httpcdn1sbnatio_ajibj

Facebook has officially bought Microsoft's Atlas advertising platform. In a statement, the company said Atlas would give advertisers a better idea of how their campaigns were doing and would "help advertisers compare their Facebook campaigns to the rest of their ad spending across the web on desktop and mobile." Atlas, Facebook says, is already in use by many advertisers on the site, but the company is planning to build out both its measurement systems and its user interface, making it easier to use and offering a more complete picture of campaigns. As Facebook works to monetize its system, this will become particularly important — despite fast growth, it's been hard to find good metrics on how well its ads actually work.

Though Facebook doesn't mention it, owning an ad serving platform could also let it provide ads on sites outside its own, making it a competitor to Google and its AdSense platform. The Facebook and Microsoft deal was previously rumored in December, and we're still not sure how much Facebook paid for the service. AdAge suggested previously that it was expected to sell for less than $100 million; Microsoft originally acquired aQuantive, which provided the technology, for around $6 billion.

E-Commerce in China Poised To Top $265B, Higher Than The U.S. [Infographic]

Media_httpreadwriteco_dzafw

China's economy is still on fire, with expected GDP growth of 8 percent in the first quarter of 2013. So it's no surprise that e-commerce is also soaring. According to compiled industry research from Alibaba Group, 2013 will mark the first time Chinese online spending exceeds that of the U.S.

Alibaba expects e-commerce in China to reach $265 billion this year, up from roughly $194 billion in 2012. The U.S., which generated $209 billion in e-commerce sales last year, will add a mere $21 billion this year, according to the projection.

Of course, China's 242 million online shoppers (out of an overall population of more than 1.34 billion) outnumber their U.S. counterparts by a cool 75 million. They buy lots of clothing and accessories, but relatively little in the way of household goods, digital media and electronics. Surveys show that China's online shoppers like the fact that they can save money on the Web, but still worry about product quality. product quality).

Modern Website Layout Designs For Inspiration - 22 Examples

Media_httpwwwdesignre_ebfea

You can subscribe on Dribble or DeviantArt to various web designers who are always adapting their methods and techniques to the current trends and you’ll have a fresh dose of inspiration when you need it the most.

Another way of keeping yourself inspired is checking out articles like this one, for example, where new and interesting web designs with cool layouts are featured. The world of mobile payments

Media_httpcdntechicom_ujlgv

Mobile is taking over the scene. Smartphones and tablets are bringing along this revolution, and our lives are becoming more intertwined with technology as a result. The term “mobile payment” actually has a number of different meanings. To some, NFC (near field communications) comes to mind. NFC is a relatively new payment option that allows users to wave either a card or mobile device in front of a sensor that will automatically process a payment for you. A lack of NFC sensors in the market has ultimately hindered the development of this payment method, but it could take off at any time.

Groupon CEO: All Is Well! Nothing to See Here! Carry On!

Media_httpallthingsdc_hanrd

Andrew Mason says Groupon is “better positioned than any other company in the world to plug local commerce into the Web,” but you wouldn’t know it from the daily deals site’s latest earnings: A fourth-quarter GAAP loss of 12 cents per share — 10 cents more than Wall Street was looking for.

As Groupon’s shares tanked in after-hours trading, Mason fielded questions from analysts on the company’s earnings call, but didn’t do much to explain how the company is going to scale its core online-coupon business. Instead, he did all that he could to paint a happy face on today’s sad results, tossing out sound bites that glossed over the issues troubling the company...

The first 3D-printed plastic car is as strong as steel and half the weight

Media_httpwwwextremet_nuepk

Cars are big and heavy, and that means they use a lot of energy while traveling. It’s easy to understand why these behemoths have traditionally been so weighty, though: It takes countless parts to make a modern car, and it’s mostly made out of steel for structural stability. That’s all changing, however, now that large-scale 3D-printing is becoming a reality. These new cars can use less parts and lighter materials to offer the same functionality and safety with less complexity and energy required. With the Urbee 2, Kor Ecologic is making a small two-passenger vehicle with a 3D-printed exterior. It’s highly efficient, light, and extremely safe in spite of being made of plastic.

In an article on Wired, the Urbee 2′s lead designer Jim Kor talks in-depth about the process being used to create this lightweight aerodynamic marvel. Using the Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM) method, thin layers of plastic are sprayed one after the other for about 2,500 hours until an entire car exterior is created. Thanks to the customizability afforded by this production method, different thicknesses and patterns can be used to reinforce the structure. This leaves us with a product as strong as traditional cars, but at a fraction of the weight.

25+ awesome redesign concepts

Media_httpnetdnawebde_mxekj

Not every designer gets the chance to work on a high-profile redesign. In fact, the vast majority will never have that chance. At least not officially.

But that doesn’t mean they don’t have some amazing ideas about how sites like Facebook, Twitter, CNN, and other big-name sites should look.

That’s why a lot of designers take on conceptual redesigns of high-profile sites as personal projects. Designers aren’t constrained by a client spec when working on solo projects like this, meaning they’re free to innovate and take risks.

Here I’ve rounded up more than two dozen awesome redesign concepts for sites like Amazon, IMDb, Facebook, Twitter, Groupon, and more, to inspire you to tackle your own concept designs.

The only problem is, mixed amid the genuine pearls are plenty of fakes. On top of that, one person’s rock is another’s diamond. What’s useful to me may be useless for you.

As a freelancer, you can use Twitter to discover the needs of potential clients, spark up new ideas for a dusty old project, see what others are saying about you and your work, and train yourself in new skills. (You can also use it to find clients and job opportunities. I explain how here).

But unless you know where to find what’s relevant to you, Twitter can seem like a big waste of time.

In this article, I show you how to use Twitter as a powerful research tool to give you the edge you need as a freelancer.

30 Beautiful Examples for InfraRed Photography - Best Photographs for you

Media_httpwebneelcomd_emhia

Until the early 20th century, infrared photography was not possible because silver halide emulsions are not sensitive to longer wavelengths than that of blue light (and to a lesser extent, green light) without the addition of a dye to act as a color sensitizer. Wood, who discovered the unusual effects that now bear his name. The RPS co-ordinated events to celebrate the centenary of this event in 2010. The first infrared photographs (as distinct from spectrographs) to be published appeared in the February 1910 edition of The Century Magazine and in the October 1910 edition of the Royal Photographic Society Journal to illustrate papers by Robert W. Wood's photographs were taken on experimental film that required very long exposures; thus, most of his work focused on landscapes. A further set of infrared landscapes taken by Wood in Italy in 1911 used plates provided for him by CEK Mees at Wratten & Wainwright. Mees also took a few infrared photographs in Portugal in 1910, which are now in the Kodak archives. Infrared-sensitive photographic plates were developed in the United States during World War I for spectroscopic analysis, and infrared sensitizing dyes were investigated for improved haze penetration in aerial photography. After 1930, new emulsions from Kodak and other manufacturers became useful to infrared astronomy.

Leap Motion To Begin Shipping In May

Media_httpreadwriteco_diehu

Leap Motion, the flash drive-sized controller that lets you manipulate your computer's interface with a multitude of precise hand gestures, will begin shipping to customers who pre-ordered the device on May 13. In a partnership with Best Buy, the Leap Motion controller will also hit physical store shelves in the U.S. starting May 19.

Since the company's founding last year, Leap Motion has advertised its product as a life-changing technological jump toward intuitive 3D software, while drawing in developers who will shortly offer a impressive suite of apps with functionality ranging from gaming and art to web browsing and 3D modeling. All these apps will be available in Leap Motion's new app store, Airspace, says Leap Motion VP of Product Marketing Mike Zagorsek.

Starting with the sci-fi-influenced idea that computing of the future will be done seamlessly with hand gestures alone (think Minority Report), CEO Mike Buckwald and CTO David Holz co-founded Leap Motion with the aim of delivering a truly futuristic product. They predict that this kind of interface could change the way we interact with technology forever, from kitchen screens at McDonald's to electronic music-creation tools for DJs, as ReadWrite editor in chief Dan Lyons wrote last December.

The Giant Security Hole That Facebook Doesn't Care About

Media_httpimggawkeras_uylwf

You probably assume hackers are using all sorts of devious viruses, obscure scripts, "exploits" (whatever that means, right?) and other complex means to break into accounts. But often the means of entry are stupid simple. Facebook has a huge one—and doesn't care about fixing it.

There's a basic premise here that isn't a Facebook problem, but really an internet problem: it's super easy to reset someone's password. The web is an ornate, lumbering thing built on tiny little stilt legs, its foundation unfit for what came after it. It's complex stuff standing on simpler stuff. New on old. And often the old can't cut it: just ask Giz alum Mat Honan, whose online life was savaged because of the stupid-simple processes standing between assholes and us online. You don't need to be a hacker—you can just talk your way in...

Responsive Web Designs For Inspiration - 40 Examples

Media_httpwwwdesignyo_dmkxc

Things are changing in the tech world and the migration of users from PC to tablets or phones adds modifications to the way web sites are designed because web sites have to be optimized for these new platforms.

In the old days, which are not that old, designers would complain about having to make a website compatible with desktop browsers, which is child’s play comparing to the times we are living now. Nowadays, almost each client you are getting asks for a mobile version of his site and that’s not a simple task either. Consider that you need to have a version for iPhone, iPad, Blackberry, Kindle and for who knows what other product will be launched in the following years.

To handle all these products and how websites are viewed on them, responsive web design has been created, a concept that means the design and development should respond to the user’s environment and behavior based on screen size, platform and orientation.

And if you come to think about it, this is a magnificent idea. We shouldn’t build a design just for a certain group. Instead, we should make it for everybody and have it adapt to the needs and platform of each individual.

What Movies Look Like Before Special Effects

Media_httpimggawkeras_jiiwh

New tumblr alert: Before VFX. It's a revealing collection of pictures that show what movies look like before any sort of visual effects are added. Which basically means it makes every movie, even Oscar-worthy movies, look completely ridiculous. The magic of the movies!

The Before VFX picture collection is growing and range from Life of Pi and Lincoln to The Avengers and Prometheus to The Muppets and John Carter. I want to see every movie before effects are added so I can laugh when I see actors prance around in half-assed costumes against a green screen. I don't think seeing beautiful people act ridiculous in a fake room will ever get old.

Typeface Design Project

Media_httpprintbenchc_xetgo

This project is born as a response to a concern about how to pull together the essence of the capitularis monumentalis uppercase alphabet with a subtle brush spirit. The aim was to find each sign morphology to combine carving and stroke in a particular way; clever and subtle. In the same way, structures of more traditional ligatures were capitalized, bringing them to a more contemporary style. The development of lowercase letters was taken as part of the challenge as well. Read more for this Typeface Design Project.

A Look at Stencil Typography

Media_httpcdndesignmo_adeav

You should be paying attention to stencil.

First, I recommend you throw away the image of ugly fonts sprayed onto industrial shipping crates and used for all sorts of army themed media. The stencil style is making a return, coming to its own style, and the results are fantastic.

Stencils are typefaces with slits in their strokes that make them appear as though they’ve been cut. There’s been a sort of surge in available stencil fonts within the past several years that show an interest in the style, beyond the faux-military aesthetic. And I’ll admit that I’ve been stuck in this rut of thinking as well. But after searching around, I’ve learned a lot of things about stencils and their strengths, and I think they’re valuable and deserve your wonderful attention. Let’s go through some notable ones!

A Stunning Showcase Of Creative Logo Examples

Logos can be incredibly difficult to design. Good logos show off a personality and capture the style of the brand well, but great logos go the extra mile by being memorable and interesting. There’s a huge range of logos out there, and historically businesses have chosen to go for professional, stern designs that many would describe as functional, yet bland. The rise of online companies have changed that, however, with more online brands opting for creative and slightly more unusual logos which help them to stand out against the competition.

We’ve collected a showcase of beautifully designed, creative logo designs to help give you some logo design inspiration. We hope you enjoy the collection and find elements that you can use for your next design project.

BlackBerry is Testing Out a Money-Transfer System With BBM

While the fate of BlackBerry remains at the forefront of debates amongst gadget circles, the cellphone company is trying new things, doing what it can to remain in the ‘black,’ so to speak. On Tuesday, Bloomberg reports, BlackBerry is working on a wireless money-transferring service through their BlackBerry messenger application.

The ‘Money Messenger’ service is beginning a pilot project with Indonesian bank, PT Bank Permata (BNLI,) currently part-owned by Standard Chestered PLC (STAN.) BB is the leading smartphone brand in Indonesia, making it a good place to test out the service.

A day after Samsung and Visa penned a deal to begin working on wireless payment system payWave, the Canadian smartphone company hopes to quickly roll their service out to their 60 million worldwide BBM customers. With an estimate of 79 million BB users, the mobile money exchange program will hope to influence the one-third or so customers who don’t use BBM service to make the switch.

Clearly, we can see the future of monetary exchange probably lies in the abilities of our smartphones. Makes sense, right? Let’s see how it plays out.

Apple Stock Tanks Again - Getting Close To A New Low

Media_httpstatic1busi_lgigm

Apple stock fell another 2% yesterday to close at $442. It's down again this morning.

The stock is now closing in on its lowest closing price since it peaked just above $700 in September.

Apple is now down almost 40% from its peak.

Apple's market value has now lost about $250 billion. Thanks to Apple's massive size, that's more money than investors in Hewlett-Packard and Research In Motion have ever lost in those two stocks combined.

Of course, Apple has only fallen to a level that it first breached in January last year. So long-term Apple investors are still in the money. At least for now.

(For the first time in forever, though, anyone who has bought Apple in the past year and held it has lost money on it).

What's going on with Apple's stock? How low could it go?

On the first question, there are several things going on with Apple's stock.

Internet Explorer 10 now available for Windows 7 users

Media_httpcdn2sbnatio_yapef

Developers have had early access to Internet Explorer 10 for Windows 7 for a few months now, but Microsoft is making the final release available to consumers and businesses today. Available in 95 languages, Windows 7 users will be auto upgraded to IE10 in the coming weeks, with the initial push targeted at IE10 Release Preview users.

Internet Explorer 10 on Windows 7 includes improved JavaScript performance, and a focus on battery life improvements for mobile PCs. Although Internet Explorer 10 has been available on Windows 8 since October 26th, Microsoft opted for a delayed Windows 7 schedule to ensure the release was fully ready, a decision that drew some criticism from users waiting on an updated browser.

Windows 7 users will now get integrated spell checking and auto-correct within IE10, as well as improved support for web standards like the latest CSS3 improvements. The user interface in IE10 for Windows 7 is largely the same as IE9, so users won't get the fullscreen experience that's available in Windows 8. Nevertheless, Internet Explorer 10 is now available to download for Windows 7.

Sony Releases New Cameras, Including Mirrorless and DSLR

Media_httpfstoppersco_fjhto

Sony has had a busy morning, with the release of five new cameras including three Cyber-shot point-and-shoots, a new mirrorless in the NEX-3N and a new 20.1 megapixel DSLR in the SLT-A58, the last of which is priced incredibly competitively at just under $600.

Sony’s camera offerings all appear to be aimed at consumers, but if you’re like me, you do like to have a Canon Rebel level camera at your side as a third camera or for video. What Sony is doing with the DSLR for under $600 (and that’s with a kit lens) appears to be really well priced, and likely is a move to try and leverage some market share. Really, all the new cameras here are extremely well priced. I’m curious to see what the market acceptance of this consumer line will be.

Here's What the Future of Employment Looks Like

Media_httpwwwinccomup_sgdef

“I don’t think the companies we will have in 10 years will be structured in a way that will even allow your eye to draw analogies with the companies we have today,” Philip Rosedale, founder of SecondLife and Coffee and Power, recently said in an interview with Peter Diamandis.

So what exactly does he think this new employment landscape will look like? In the lengthy post, Rosedale outlined a seven key features, but here are the highlights:

Turnover will go through the roof. The trend of employees rapidly cycling through companies (currently, on average, a young person changes jobs every 18 months) will dramatically increase, redefining the way we work.

"People won't necessarily think of themselves as being employed by a single company. They won't necessarily work at one company for 10 years; they might work at it for 10 months or even 10 days,” Rosedale told Diamandis. “The companies of the future will be these aggregations of people who work together not necessarily because they're working for one person or on one project, but because they're somehow useful to each other at a high level."

Media_httpstatic4busi_cjpzt

While other kids were out playing soccer or getting into trouble, Box CEO Aaron Levie and one of his best friends, Jeff Queisser, would hang out at home and launch startups.

They started something like 15 companies, Levie told ReadWrite''s Dan Lyons in an interview last week, including one called Zizap, which Levie described jokingly as "the fastest search engine on the Internet – minus Google."

Levie says that these childhood companies were often nothing more than a few Web pages. But a few were more ambitious like an Internet kiosk for hotels and malls, a Web portal for real estate listings, reports Forbes Victoria Barret.
