Build a Better Professional Network and Transform Your Business

Media_httpnetdnacopyb_bhsjd

Did you know there is a direct correlation between who you spend time with and what your life looks like?

True.

You tend to be happier if you hang out with happy people, more successful if you hang out with successful people, more pessimistic if you hang out with pessimistic people.

So if you’ve got some audacious goals and want to nudge them closer to reality, one thing you can do is spend more time with the people who have the qualities you want.

T-Mobile may launch the first 5G LTE-Advanced network

Media_httpicdn4digita_fisvx

Rumors abound about T-Mobile “5G” LTE, with upload and download speeds already tested at 300Mbps. Currently, 4G LTE connections are tested at about a third of that, but rarely reach their full potential, usually capping off at about 50Mbps.

T-Mobile was among the last of the major carriers to make the switch to 4G LTE, but it looks like it was planning ahead for the bigger jump. Yasmin Karimli, T-Mobile’s head of Radio Network and Evolution Strategy, told VentureBeat in an interview, “I think we’ll probably be able to move faster [to LTE-Advanced than other companies] because we have the latest hardware in place … Others may have hardware that’s two years old, so they may have to rip and replace.”

Dish Network Makes $25.5 Billion Bid for Sprint Nextel

Media_httprack1mshcdn_yzgge

Charging it will offer a "superior value for Sprint shareholders," Dish Network on Monday announced it was making a $25.5 billion bid for Sprint Nextel.

Dish is offering Sprint shareholders $17.3 billion in cash plus $8.2 billion in stock. Dish's bid of $7 a share is a 12.5% premium over Sprint's closing price on Friday. However, Monday morning Sprint's shares were up about 15% to $7.18 on the news. Dish's bid comes as Japan's SoftBank in October agreed to buy a 70% stake in Sprint.

Dish Network Chairman Said To Be Seeking A Merger With T-Mobile USA

Media_httptctechcrunc_dgwac

Say what you will about Dish Network, but the Colorado company’s brass has some moxie.

The satellite media service provider has been trying for years now to link up with notable national wireless carrier to help operate a mobile service to sell alongside its current offerings, and according to a recent report from Bloomberg, Dish Network chairman Charlie Ergen has approached T-Mobile parent company Deutsche Telekom about the possibility of a Dish/T-Mobile merger.

In case you haven’t been keeping tabs on Dish’s potential push into the wireless market, the saga has enough bumps and twists to rival a soap opera. This is far from the first time that representatives of the company have made these sorts of overtures towards major wireless carriers and their parent businesses. Just prior to the collapse of the AT&T/T-Mobile merger in December 2011, Dish Network CEO Joseph Clayton pointed out the possibility of striking a deal with T-Mobile in a bid to bolster Dish’s coffers and light up its own wireless service.

Networking For Designers 101

Media_httpspeckycdnsd_edpna

Ah, networking. Every creative freelancer’s favorite thing ever. Going out to events, shaking hands, plastering on a fake smile, getting paper cuts from passing out hundreds of business cards, dodging flakes and crazies galore. Or perhaps you’re the online type of networker – stalking people on Twitter and LinkedIn, carpet bombing potential clients with form letters and links to your portfolio, sitting by the inbox waiting for it to fill up. Any of this sounding familiar?

I love networking. But not because I do any of the above. Many designers assume that there’s only one way to network, but the truth is that’s just not the case. Today, I’m going to show you a much easier and more effective way to go about making networking connections as a freelancer, and also tell you why you should never, ever approach networking in the manner described above.

5 Ways to Use Your Network to Grow Your Business

Media_httpwwwentrepre_cfypf

Have you ever sought advice from the people in a business network you belong to? If not, you are missing out on one of the secondary benefits of being involved in a networking group.

Sure, the primary reason you’re networking is to get referrals, but you also gain access to professionals in almost every type of business. Every good network can actually become a type of “mastermind” group that you can tap to gain more information and knowledge.

Here’s a story about how a simple request for advice led to much more. An owner of a small creative-services firm wanted to relocate across the country to a state with a more favorable business climate. But she became frustrated by her difficulty in communicating with government entities two time zones away. Her plans came to a standstill.

How to Get More Freelancing Visibility

Media_httpfreelancefo_enudh

There’s a simple answer to the question of why you don’t have more clients. Your potential clients don’t know that you exist.
While many freelancers don’t think much about how easily they can be found by their prospects, all freelancers should consider visibility. Your freelancing ability affects whether or not you attract new clients.

If your prospective clients can’t find you, then they can’t hire you. That’s a fact.

In this post, I’ll discuss why freelancing visibility is important. I’ll also explain how you can make your freelancing business more visible.

Ad-skipping DVR prompts fight for the future of TV

It turns out that consumers like the idea of watching TV shows with no other ads. And, surprise, the television networks are less than thrilled.

On Friday, news was continuing to emerge about a flurry of lawsuits between Dish Network, which last week released a tool to let its DVR customers do exactly that, and the major television networks.

It's a battle over a new technology tool. But, in some ways, it's a microcosm of the fight for the future of television and how we watch it.

"With Dish's aggressive move to please the end customer rather than advertisers, it's clear that in the fight for TV revenue the gloves have finally come off," James L. McQuivey, an analyst for Forrester Research, told The New York Times. "The fact that Dish would be willing to anger some of its most important content partners just goes to show how desperate these times we live in really are."

Two weeks ago, Dish rolled out Auto Hop, a feature for its DISH DVR that lets users who subscribe automatically skip ads while watching recorded shows.

Media_httpimggawkeras_croag

We knew Dish Network's new Hopper DVR seemed too good to be true. Or too good to not be sued into oblivion, at least. Now comes news that FOX is suing Dish over the Hopper, and Dish is suing, well, everyone.

A few minutes ago, the New York Times' Brian Stelter confirmed and tweeted the news:

How Web Designers Can Successfully Use the Dribbble Network

Media_httpcdndesignmo_jrige

Do you like basketball? If you do and you are a web designer, you may take a liking to the design community Dribbble. If you hate sports, no worries! You still may like the network, especially if you are a web designer looking to showcase some of your work and share snippets of it with others.

Dribbble (yes, it has 3 B’s) is made up of a community of designers and creative types who share small screenshots of their daily work. The site’s verbiage is based on the sport basketball, but you don’t have to be a basketball enthusiast to enjoy the site.

Dribbble is like the Twitter for design work. Instead of asking users “What are you doing?” it begs answers to the question, “What are you working on?”.
