The Bio-Retina Implant Could Give Sight to the Blind, With Laser Power

Media_httpwwwpopscico_biybs

A new bionic eye implant could allow blind people to recognize faces, watch TV and even read. Nano Retina’s Bio-Retina is one of two recent attempts to help patients with age-related macular degeneration, which affects 1.5 million people in the U.S. Although a similar implant, Second Sight’s Argus II, has been on the market in Europe since last year, it requires a four-hour operation under full anesthesia because it includes an antenna to receive power and images from an external apparatus. The Bio-Retina implant is smaller because it doesn’t have an antenna. Instead, the implant captures images directly in the eye, and a laser powers the implant remotely. Because of Bio-Retina’s compact size, an ophthalmologist can insert it through a small incision in the eye in 30 minutes—potentially more appropriate for seniors. The Bio-Retina will generate a 576-pixel grayscale image. And clinical trials could begin as soon as next year.

NASA Envisions Alien Worlds Photos

Media_httplyimgcombta_ebtql

For decades, NASA has delighted stargazers with pictures taken by astronauts, telescopes, and rovers across the galaxy -- photographic glimpses of real planets, moons, stars, and other heavenly bodies. Captured by a camera or, as in this gallery, envisioned by artists, the far reaches of space continue to humble and amaze.

How to Be a Visionary Thinker

Media_httpwwwinccomup_lrzce

When we entrepreneurs talk about "the dream," we are not talking about a fantasy, like winning the lottery. We are talking about the things that really matter to us and what we are willing to do to make our dream a reality. It's one thing to be a visionary and have a creative idea that you're really passionate about, and another to have an idea that's also practical and strategic. A true and viable entrepreneurial dream is something that we are excited and passionate about—and will also be very profitable.

"The ideal professional dream is to be paid well for doing what you love," says Marcia Wieder, CEO of Dream University. Wieder is a 14-time published author, personal transformation expert, former president of the National Association of Women Business Owners, and has been the catalyst for thousands of individuals turning their dreams into realities over the past 20 years.

Media_httpbetaimagest_iihib

Just when you thought they could do it all, smartphones could soon give mere mortals the power of X-ray vision.

Scientists at the University of Texas at Dallas have invented an “imager chip” that can transform mobile phones into devices that can see through walls and other objects.

“Well, you know, superheroes – who would not want to have superpowers?” said Kenneth O, a professor of electrical engineering at UT Dallas who spearheaded the research over eight years.
