How Playing Games Makes You Live Longer

Media_http9mshcdncomw_kwejf

It’s easy to write off our gaming addiction as a waste of time. But game designer Jane McGonigal argues the exact opposite; that games can actually extend our life expectancy. And she has the data to support it.

McGonial, who in a previous TED Talk advocated that the world collectively play 21 billion hours of games per week, started her presentation at TED Global on Thursday by citing a widely-circulated study of the most common regrets of people on their death beds.

She then detailed how games address all of them, drawing on her personal experience of suffering a serious concussion that left her unable to do most of the things she loved, like playing video games, reading, writing and caffeine. That left her deeply depressed, to the point where she said “I am either going to kill myself, or I’m going to turn this into a game.”

Join us past the break for our initial impressions in text and on camera.

Finally You Can Achieve Something Useful By Playing Addictive Online Games

Media_httpstatic6busi_jcyct

A San Francisco startup called Grantoo bets it can make a killing on millennials' addiction to playing online games.

On the site, students play customized, branded games like virtual Scrabble and poker for cash prizes between $75 and $5,000. And here's the kicker: They can put that prize money toward paying off debt.

Co-founder Dimitri Sillam told BI the concept came to him around college when he realized how easily his friends wasted hours playing games such as "Farmville" and "Angry Birds," but still mooched off Mom and Dad.

"Everyone was playing games every day, but struggling to pay for tuition," he said. "Meanwhile, in the hallway, there was always some guy from a big bank trying to turn us into customers."

Today, YouTube is rolling out the beta to all of YouTube’s users – creators and viewers alike – by offering the option to automatically convert short-form videos that were uploaded in 1080p to 3D.

In other words, viewers no longer have to wait on YouTube creators to convert their videos into 3D – you can now do it yourself.

Yes, You Can Play Angry Birds With a Real Slingshot

Media_httpimggawkeras_jbwgd

Unless it was created by master builder Joerg Sprave, it's rare for a slingshot to be of any real interest. But even though we're pretty sick of hearing about Angry Birds, this slingshot controller for the game is kind of neat.

It's built around an mbed microcontroller which translates the angle of the slingshot and the force on the elastic to mouse movements. So pinching on the sling and pulling it back is like clicking on the slingshot in the game and dragging your mouse's cursor back.
