The World's Oldest Working Computer Has Been Resurrected

The world's oldest working digital computer, often referred to as "The Witch", has been given a new lease of life. A team of computer scientists has restored it to its former glory—and now it's on display for all to see.

The computer was originally designed and developed all the way back in 1949 at the UK's Atomic Energy Research Establishment at Harwell in Oxfordshire. Weighing in at 2.5 tonnes, the behemoth was designed to crunch calculations for nuclear scientists, so they didn't have to use mechanical adding machines.

Apple releases iOS 5.0.1, includes iPhone battery fix

As promised, Apple has released iOS 5.0.1 — an update to its iOS 5 mobile operating system, released Oct. 12. This update includes a potential fix for bugs affecting iPhone battery life, adds multitasking gestures to the first-generation iPad and resolves some miscellaneous issues.

Apple's iOS 5.0.1 update apparently fixes the battery drain problem, at least according to some early testers.

Revealing comments made by users who've installed the update, Wired found that most are enjoying a big boost in battery power. Followers of Wired on Twitter chimed in after the magazine posted a tweet asking who has updated to iOS 5.0.1 and if it improved their battery life.

Many people are experiencing horrible iPhone 4S battery life. Apple Support Forum is full of complaints that their iPhone 4S battery is draining drastically. No one is certain about the main cause of the problem and even Apple hasn’t yet said officially about this puzzle, although, there’re reports that Apple support staff is contacting some of the people who post in Support forum individually to solve the problem. According to Apple, iPhone 4S has standby time of up to 200 hours but many buyers of the device aren’t even getting 24-hours standby time.

This week brought good news for those affected with lackluster iPhone battery life after upgrading to iOS 5. Help is on the way.

Apple copped to the quick drainage problem and said it was working on a fix in the form of a software update that will arrive to users in the "next few weeks."
