Flipboard Update Lets You Create Your Own Magazines

Media_httpimggawkeras_jlppq

Flipboard takes the news you want to read and organizes it into a wonderfully designed magazine format. And now, with an update to its iOS apps, it lets you create your own magazines for specific themes, topics, events, and so on.

Want to create a magazine about, say, New York City public transit? It's fairly simple. You just hit the plus button on anything you see in Flipboard—whether it's a story about cab drivers, a photo of abandoned train stations, or a relevant video or sound clip—then select "create magazine" and add a title and description. The process a similar to adding items to a Pinterest board, but the auto-generated design of your Flipboard magazine is so much prettier. Once you're done, anyone can search for and subscribe to your digital 'zine, and you can look for ones that interest you, too.

Minimalist Magazine Covers by Scott Nicholson

Media_httpwwwyouthede_ooooj

The art of minimalism or creating designs with less details to achieve a “minimalist” theme is getting more popular today from print ads to movie posters. Limiting the use of design elements is a common trend today in major fields like web design, print and even in app development. Having said this, more and more artists are exploring the minimalist style in their own creative fields. One such creative is Scott Nicholson, a multi-disciplinary designer from Boston who specializes in illustration, branding, web and print design.

Scott decided to initiate a personal project in response to the trend of using the art of minimalism in various art forms. He always find it interesting to see various take on the “minimalist” work and how those simple ideas can be very effective. The medium he considered for the creative project was magazines. Through his Minimalist Magazine Covers, he defined how simplistic covers with minimal text and imagery can be very striking to look at.

Magazine design principles applied to web design

Media_httpnetdnawebde_qcaor

A lot of principles of magazine design and layout are easily transferred to the world of web design. Some of these are pretty obvious, while you may have overlooked others. But really, it’s all about good design transcending medium.

Here I’ve covered some of my favorite lessons from magazine design, and how they can apply to web design. But the most important thing I hope you can take away from this article is that you can take design ideas and conventions from one form of media and apply it to others.

So if your background is in something like interior design or graphic design or even something like industrial design, you can take those principles you already know and apply them to your web design projects.

The death of a public figure of Albert Einstein’s stature is the sort of event that, literally and figuratively, stops the presses.
