Magazine design principles applied to web design

Media_httpnetdnawebde_qcaor

I got my professional start in the world of design at a specialty magazine publisher. Magazine layout and design is, therefore, very close to my heart.

A lot of principles of magazine design and layout are easily transferred to the world of web design. Some of these are pretty obvious, while you may have overlooked others. But really, it’s all about good design transcending medium.

Here I’ve covered some of my favorite lessons from magazine design, and how they can apply to web design. But the most important thing I hope you can take away from this article is that you can take design ideas and conventions from one form of media and apply it to others.

So if your background is in something like interior design or graphic design or even something like industrial design, you can take those principles you already know and apply them to your web design projects.

User Experience (UX) Principles and Best Practices

Media_httpcdninstants_vkmgr

In one of the simplest form possible, UX, is also know as user usability and user experience. This term describes how the most basic user will use an application, a website, a program or anything that can actually “be used”. User Experience is based on how the user behaves. It is different than what gaining feedback is, because UX bases on how will the user reach its final goal or aim – buy the product, input the email address, or even simpler – click a button.

Successful Businesses: 9 Most Important Elements

Media_httpwwwinccomup_mffii

It used to be that start-ups began with the “entrepreneur’s vision,” which was usually a highly product-centric idea for a company. Only much later--and after much agonizing--would the founder discover the idea itself didn’t amount to a complete business model.

That era in start-ups is over. Or at least it should be.

Using the Customer Development process along with the business model canvas first developed by Alexander Osterwalder, it’s possible to assemble a far more detailed version of your “vision” that includes the nine most important elements of any successful business (we’ll get to what those are below). With that in hand, you can validate your vision with the only possible “validators”--your potential customers. As customers applaud or pan elements of the business model, you iterate the model and pivot over time based on that feedback. The constantly updated business model becomes a “scorecard” for monitoring progress as you go through the Customer Discovery phase.

Basic web design principles that will make or break any site

Media_httpwwwgraphicd_svhsg

Ten years ago, the common things we see on websites are frames, navigation bars (that we still need to scroll up and down, left and right), blinking graphics, moving texts, huge images as backgrounds, etc.

Some of us who created websites in the past ten years will probably feel guilty as to why we neglected the principles of design and the user-friendliness of a web site.

There are two very important things you have to consider when designing a website: Users and Search Engines.

Principles of Color and the Color Wheel

Media_httptympanusnet_lhthk

The first color wheel has been around for more than 300 years and was developed by Sir Isaac Newton, according to ColourLovers. Other color charts, though, existed before that time. The basic design has evolved over time but the concept remains the same – almost any color combination from the wheel will work together.

Do not view the tight budget or the lean economy as your enemy. Certainly we all enjoy times of prosperity more than times of recession, but it's often during tight periods that we learn to harness creativity, drop the deadweight and get our businesses lean and ready for real growth. And real growth usually comes after tight times. So hang in there with your business and look for the positive side of a tighter budget.
