There's A Security Flaw With Apple IDs That Puts Your Account At Risk

Media_httpstatic1busi_jhzbc

Update: Apple has shut down its "iForgot" password recovery page to deal with a security flaw, which is described below.

Original: Watch out, there's a security flaw that could let someone easily take over your Apple accounts, Chris Welch at The Verge reports.

If someone knows your email address and your date of birth they can reset your password. All it takes is a slight tweak of a URL on Apple's "iForgot" page.

Welch says there is a step-by-step guide floating around the Internet, though he didn't link to it to discourage people from actually doing it.

Facebook’s Never Had A Big User Data Breach, But May Never Recover When It Does

Media_httptctechcrunc_rdzba

It’s not if, but when. Between crooks, hackers and foreign governments, Facebook probably can’t avoid a serious user data breach forever. When it happens, Facebook may never be able to quiet fears that “personal data isn’t safe there.” That could cause a chilling effect on sharing, jeopardize its future in commerce, and cut short its lifetime.

This isn’t to say Facebook’s not doing everything in its power to prevent this. It has a sizable security team of top talent, infiltrates hacker rings to thwart their schemes, and offers cash bounties to white hats who identify bugs or holes.

Yesterday, though, Facebook announced something very unsettling. A “sophisticated attack” uploaded malware onto the computers of several Facebook engineers when they visited a hacked mobile developer site. Facebook quickly quarantined and scrubbed the devices, called the police, and kicked off an investigation. So far, there’s been no evidence that any user data had been compromised. Perhaps the attackers were after Facebook’s trade secrets or information about partners. Regardless, it was a very close call.

iOS 6.1 Security Risk: Anyone Can Bypass Your iPhone's Lock Screen

Media_httpimggawkeras_ardqz

So, iOS 6.1 hasn't been Apple's finest hour. So far it's been plagued with connection issues, battery woes, and now it's sadly insecure, too. You can bypass any lockcode on an iPhone using this straightforward sequence of button presses.

The instructions are pretty simple. First you have to pretend to turn the phone off, then make an aborted emergency call, then a quick bit of off button and cancel pressing. That boots you into the full phone app where you can pretty much call or message anyone you like, or edit phone contacts.
