YouTube Rejects White House Request To Pull Video That's Causing Anti-American Protests

Media_httpstatic3busi_gncrb

Google Inc rejected a request by the White House on Friday to reconsider its decision to keep online a controversial YouTube movie clip that has ignited anti-American protests in the Middle East.

The Internet company said it was censoring the video in India and Indonesia after blocking it on Wednesday in Egypt and Libya, where U.S. embassies have been stormed by protestors enraged over depiction of the Prophet Mohammad as a fraud and philanderer.

On Tuesday, the U.S. Ambassador to Libya and three other Americans were killed in a fiery siege on the embassy in Benghazi.

Tens Of Thousands Rally Against Putin

Media_httpa57foxnewsc_cxnzf

Tens of thousands of Russians flooded downtown Moscow on Saturday to demand an end to Prime Minister Vladimir Putin's rule, braving sub-zero temperatures to keep the protest movement alive one month before a presidential election that Putin is still expected to win.

The protest -- which drew 120,000 people, according to organizers -- was the third mass demonstration since Putin's party won a parliamentary election Dec. 4 with the help of what appeared to be widespread fraud.

These Websites Are Going Dark to Protest SOPA

Media_http5mshcdncomw_kbkjj

Tech companies are getting ready to black out on Jan. 18 to protest the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) and its sibling the Protect IP Act (PIPA).

Much has been made of Wikipedia’s promise to “go dark,” or shut down the site, for the day as a way of warning what might happen if SOPA became law. The tech protesters say that SOPA would render any site that included links, even if they were user-submitted, practically unoperable and liable to government take-down. Going dark is a dramatic but not entirely unrealistic warning of what the Internet could look like in a SOPA world.

Wikipedia will pull its plug on Wednesday in protest of SOPA and PIPA, controversial bills in Congress that could seriously change the way the Internet works if they get passed.

Wikipedia's protest is sure to get some attention from those who are still unaware of the issue -- Alexa pegs Wikipedia as 6th most heavily trafficked site in the world and in the US.

Co-founder Jimmy Wales tweeted that comScore estimates that the English version of Wikipedia receives an average of 25 million daily visitors globally.

Media_httprwwreadwrit_rzzcl

There's been a flurry of good news in the last few days for opponents of the SOPA/PIPA anti-piracy legislation worming its way through the U.S. Congress. The White House has come out opposing key flaws in the legislation, so both versions are effectively stuck for now. Not taking any chances, some of the world's biggest websites, including Wikipedia and Reddit, are going dark on Wednesday, January 18 to protest the ill-conceived anti-piracy legislation.

Occupy movement sparks a battle of the blogs

Media_httpbetaimagest_zbdht

You’ll be forgiven if you’re still wondering what the Occupy Wall Street movement is occupying things for, since they’re none too sure. The movement – which has generalized into a kind of global Occupy Whatever’s Handy protest – takes a certain pleasure in being amorphous, an umbrella group with a “Down With This Sort of Thing” mandate. Are they after income equality? An end to corporate citizenhood? Free tuition? The rich, served on a platter with a nice wine pairing? All of the above?
