Android Video Game Console Ouya Will Also Let You Play Against Friends Online

Media_httpstatic5busi_aagxa

Android-based gaming console Ouya seems to be coming along nicely and will have multiplayer game support by year's end, reports Forbes.

During a South By Southwest panel in Austin today, Ouya CEO Julie Uhrman said the console would have support for streaming audio and video apps, but wouldn't say if big names like Hulu and Netflix were on board. Regardless, she hopes to be able to offer those services at launch.

Now You Can Pay To Promote Your Friends’ Facebook Posts To More People, Even Without Their Permission

Media_httptctechcrunc_ohptb

Until natural language processing improves, only humans can tell what’s important. So Facebook today starts rolling out the option to pay to promote a friend’s posts and get them seen by more people. This will help critical posts bubble to the top of the feed, and let Facebook earn some money too. The feature respects privacy controls, but could still make you look like a self-important prick.

Facebook began testing the ability to promote your own posts in May 2012 and rolled the feature out to the US in October. See, your average Facebook post only gets seen by about 16% of your friends because they aren’t online soon after you post, or you never interact with them on Facebook. Promoted Posts artificially boost your posts so they appear in the news feed to people Facebook wouldn’t have shown them to.

Facebook Friends: How Many Is Too Many?

Media_httpwwwreadwrit_ircjo

Forget its $104 billion IP0, Facebook’s greatest achievement is building a social network of 950 million people. But what if that tremendous size is also Facebook’s Achilles' Heel? Forget “too big to fail.” What if Facebook is getting too big to succeed? Ever-growing friend lists threaten to make the service less personal - and less compelling.

That’s certainly a counter-intuitive viewpoint. The tremendous size of Facebook’s user base is why industry and financial analysts believe the company will survive the beating it has taken in the stock market since going public in May and will remain the pre-eminent social network for the foreseeable future.

Update: Facebook Kills Its 'Find Friends Nearby' Feature

Media_httpstatic8busi_hwsdj

We first noticed Facebook's newest mobile feature earlier today, and we admit, it was a bit creepy.

The feature let you see which strangers near you were using the Facebook app.

Now, when we try to navigate to http://fb.com/ffn the link is dead and we can't find friends anymore.

Facebook told ABC News that the feature was pulled, so we're guessing the negative backlash caused the feature to die a quick and early death.

Facebook's new 'Find Friends Nearby' feature: Creepy or clever?

Facebook quietly added a new feature to its mobile website and apps this weekend. It's called "Find Friends Nearby" and it ... well, it does exactly what you'd think it might.

TechCrunch's Ingrid Lunden was among the first to call attention to the new feature, after a developer tipped her off.

You can access Find Friends Nearby either through the iOS or Android Facebook apps — just open up the main menu, tap "Apps," select "Find Friends," press "Other Tools," and then pick "Find Friends Nearby" — or by heading to http://fb.com/ffn on your mobile device.

[STUDY] Facebook Defriending is on the Rise

Media_httprwwreadwrit_ednkc

If you've been defriending a lot lately, you're not alone.

A new study out from Pew today confirms what we already know: People don't want to collect as many Facebook friends as possible. Social networkers are becoming more selective, managing their accounts and "pruning" people from their lists. More users are untagging themselves from photos, deleting comments and unfriending others. Women and younger users tend to prune more than others: 67% of women with social network site profiles have deleted users compared with 58% of men.
