Media_httpwwwsimplyze_rsoqd

With the many changes to advertising and the way we consume media, it’s perhaps comforting that in light of all the adjustments and new features out there, email marketing is still a tried and trusted way of reaching your audience. But while the format of email hasn’t changed much since it was introduced, how we’re consuming such content has.

With more people looking at their mobile screens as well as desktop, it’s important to adapt your content so that it’s accessible to both audiences.

With Gmail approaching a decade, here’s how it has evolved

Media_httpcdntechicom_nmkca

It’s hard to believe that it’s already been over 9 years since Gmail was opened up in beta. When it was first launched, many thought it was an April Fool’s Day joke because it was launched April 1, 2004. Some joke, eh?

IRS Doesn’t Deny Snooping Emails Without A Warrant

Media_httptctechcrunc_xcivc

The IRS refuses to deny whether its Criminal Tax Division rummages through suspected tax dodgers’ emails without a warrant. In response to the American Civil Liberties Union request for its privacy policy, the IRS dumped 247 records, revealing that the agency definitely believed it could access emails without a warrant before a court deemed the practice illegal. The agency is conspicuously silent on whether it still applies those old spying rules.

Despite being hailed by modern man as one of the greatest cultural innovations there is, email is the second most time consuming activity for the workforce, as reported by a 2012 study by McKinsey Global Institute and International Data Corp.

Hotmail Users, It's Time To Move To Outlook.com, Like It Or Not

Media_httpreadwriteco_gqbmx

"OK, people, listen up. Seymour, pay attention. Elsie, turn on your hearing aid. It's time to move your Hotmail accounts to Outlook.com. Hey! No, stop complaining. Don't use that language, Ethel, it's un-ladylike."

Yes, the the time has come - the hundreds of millions of email users who are currently using Hotmail will be migrated over to Outlook.com by this summer, Microsoft said Tuesday. For many of Microsoft's long-time customers, this will be their first experience with the Windows 8-styled "Metro" user interface that Microsoft is propagating around its properties.

"We've been very excited by the adoption of the preview and how it's delivering on our promise of a new, reimagined email service," David Law, director of product management for Outlook.com, said in a blog post on Tuesday. "Throughout the preview, we learned a tremendous amount from seeing how people used the service. Early adopters have told us what they liked, what they'd like to see next, and what we needed to do to make more people switch. And we've used that to add new features and fine-tune the services to scale. Now that Outlook.com is coming out of preview, we'll be kicking off a huge push across a number of countries around the world to drive even greater awareness and adoption of Outlook.com."

RIP HOTMAIL

Media_httpstatic5busi_bccdn

Microsoft said Tuesday it had begun switching Hotmail accounts to Outlook.com as it officially launches its revamped email service.

"Starting today, Microsoft will begin to upgrade every Hotmail user to Outlook.com.," the company said in a statement. "The upgrade is seamless and instant for Hotmail customers; everything including their @hotmail.com email address, password, contacts, etc., will stay the same."

Microsoft said last year it was overhauling its email service as it adapts for mobile users and social media.

Can Social Media Replace Email?

Media_httpstatic4busi_tfhej

There are many reasons that social media platforms will never fully replace email within the working environment, despite Yammer and others bringing social media and social messaging platforms into the workplace:

Email provides a level of privacy and professionalism

Email inboxes provide a one stop-hub for tasks and one-to-one communications

There's not the worry about privacy issues with email as there is with social media

Email works across all platforms and applications

Email has become more than just a two-way communication tool

Social media does not provide a professional online space for business one-to-ones

Social media has a major issue with ownership

Writing Email Copy That Turns Into Sales

Media_httpfreelancesw_dhhfi

For many of us heavily invested in eCommerce, the official economic recession of 2008 has one positive spin: it bolsters and quickens our culture’s direction online. We are increasingly moving to the Web not just for product research, but actual browsing and buying. This year, more shoppers are comfortably online for all the reasons we expect: 24/7 access, no lines, gas prices, convenience.

In terms of marketing, online sales success is also thanks to well-crafted offers and promotions like free shipping and discounts that quickly expire. These are delivered through the simple, workaday effort of links in emails. Despite issues with spam, email is still a hardworking champion for sales and currently the ultimate marketing delivery vehicle for an online audience.

Marissa Mayer Announces A New Yahoo Mai

Media_httpstatic3busi_trcou

Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer just announced a complete overhaul to Yahoo's email products.

There's a new version for Android, Windows Phone, iPhone and the Web.
The new design is cleaner – whiter and sparser. There are fewer ads.
In a blog post, Mayer says users "told us loud and clear" that they want "fewer distractions when it comes to email."

"You want to quickly login, communicate, and get on with your day. And we’ve listened."

Rolling out a new version of Yahoo Mail is, by far, the most important thing Mayer has done since she became CEO in July.

Gmail Threatens Dropbox By Allowing Users To Send Files Up To 10GB

Media_httpstatic6busi_eflcp

If you're a Gmail user, there's good news: You can now send files as large as 10 gigabytes.

If you're a Dropbox investor or employee, though, that's bad news.

The Web-based email service now integrates with Google's Drive storage system, according to ReadWrite's Jon Mitchell.

Users don't have to do anything to take advantage of this new feature. When you attach a file, Gmail will double-check that your recipients have permission to view the files in Google Drive.

Ten Tricks To Make Yourself a Gmail Master

Media_httpimggawkeras_daopa

Back in 2004, Gmail rewrote the rules for Web-based email. It had a fast, clean interface, and a jaw-dropping 1GB of free storage. Today, it comes with ten times the amount of space, and boasts many millions of users across the globe.

But even if you use it every day, you're probably not making the most of the features it has to offer. With these seven tips, you can take your Gmail life beyond "power user." You can be an off-the-deep-end Gmail megalomaniac.

Facebook Is About To Send One Billion Emails

Media_httpimggawkeras_kqzyh

Billion, with a B. An email to every single one of its users—so actually a little over a billion at this point. In other words, one seventh of the entire Earth's population is getting hit with one message.

The blast—the largest email dispatch Facebook has ever sent out in its history, and certainly one of the biggest non-spam deliveries in email history—isn't even of anything particularly thrilling. In short, Facebook used to allow users to vote on certain policy changes if enough people chimed in—now they're going to phase that out, which doesn't matter because nobody really used this system anyway.

So as not to cause some sort of explosion, Facebook told us it'll be sending the messages out in waves But still! One billion emails. One billion people, hypothetically all reading the exact same thing. How many times has that happened in human history? I would venture not that many times! Of course, if you add in all the people who will die between now and then, spam filters, people who just delete everything, and those mutants with 95,000 unread messages in their inbox, the number will be lower than 1,000,000,000.

Email Marketing and Design: Tips for Total Success

Media_httpdesignsignn_rshhk

Email newsletters don’t have anything in common with spam, so there is not a single reason to stop sending them to your clients! As we’ve already mentioned – newsletters help you reach your business target audience directly and inform about all the newest events with minimum efforts. There are far more reasons to keep on sending newsletters, and we’ve talked about it in one of the previous articles. But there is another aspect to consider – the success of the result depends not on HOW OFTEN you send, but WHAT you send.

New Jersey to allow registered voters to vote by email

Media_httpcdn6digital_fhdmc

Definitely helpful for anyone in New Jersey displaced by the destructive power of Hurricane Sandy, registered voters can vote electronically this year.

Detailed within a press release from the office of New Jersey governor Chris Christie, the New Jersey Department of State has enacted a new directive that offers the ability to vote electronically to New Jersey registered voters that had to relocate due to the devastation of Hurricane Sandy. In addition to making it easier to vote for Sandy victims, this new directive also gives emergency relief workers the opportunity to vote without have to make a trip back to their home area of New Jersey. In addition to voting by email, sending a fax is also a valid method of voting for New Jersey registered voters.

8 Dangerous (But Common) Misconceptions About Email Marketing

Media_httpbloghubspot_byfsd

In terms of digital marketing channels, email marketing is one of the oldest. More than a decade counts as a long time in digital marketing, you know.

That means it's had more than its fair share of time to accumulate plenty of misconceptions and myths about how it works. But the times, they are a' changin', guys.

Some of these myths make sense -- perhaps they were once grounded in reality, but over time best practices have changed, yet the myths persisted. The other myths? They're just a bunch of hulabaloo! But they're the kind of misconceptions that, if marketers believe them, can really impact the effectiveness of email marketing campaigns. And nobody wants that.

So, this blog post will cover all of the common myths and misconceptions that plague the email marketing world, and debunk them once and for all. And of course, if you have any myths of your own you'd like debunked, submit them in the comments -- perhaps we'll even need a part two to this post!

Meet Alto, The Gmail Replacement You Won't Believe Was Made By AOL

Media_httpstatic1busi_dejcn

AOL's problem is it largely depends on two declining sources of traffic, people who use AOL to get online and Web-based AOL.com email users.

The numbers seem to show declines in Web-based email aren't worth fighting. Teens don't like to use email and older adults check their email in apps on their phones.

Across the entire Internet, Web-based email was up a mere 1% in September 2012 over September 2011. AOL Mail is down 8%. Yahoo Mail is down 16%. Hotmail is down 18%.
