Angry Birds: An example of casual gaming greatness

Media_httpwwwtechnolo_wnske
via www.gadgetell.com">technologytell.com

For the longest time, smartphone games have been relegated to the deep recesses of life. In my early years of smartphone ownership I found myself playing them during my most boring times. Even so, the ensuing doctor’s appointment, sandwich, or speeding ticket penalty always seemed more interesting than what the market had to offer. I didn’t leave my progress excited for the next opportunity to play. This changed with Rovio’s Angry Birds.

Angry Birds offered a simple concept. The game-play was not revolutionary. For me, what differentiated Angry Birds from its casual gaming competition was its soul. The characters had very distinct personalities that gave the game life. It did not simply offer a start screen and a couple of levels. Each level was complex and, even after their initial completion, challenged users to perfect their strategy. How many times have you had an early victory dance cut short by the flashing of two accursed stars?

Rovio's Mighty Eagle on Taking His Angry Birds Into the Real World

Media_httpallthingsdc_mliws

While many gaming companies are working to move all-digital, Rovio is looking at ways to increase its real-world presence.

Already, 30 percent of sales come from physical goods. “In a few years, more than half of our business will be physical,” Rovio marketing chief Peter Vesterbacka said during a panel discussion at the Open Mobile Summit on Thursday.

That’s not to say the company isn’t devoting a lot of time to its game-making. This year has already seen the Angry Birds flying into space, along with the release of Birds spinoff Bad Piggies, and Amazing Alex, a non-Angry birds title. And, on Thursday, the company released Star Wars Angry Birds.

Amazing Alex just hit the App Store and Google Play store today.

The puzzle game is made Rovio, the same people who brought you Angry Birds.

Amazing Alex is a physics game based off of a similar game, Casey's Contraptions. Rovio acquired the rights to the game earlier in the year.

It doesn't seem like Amazing Alex is too different from Casey's Contraptions but, that doesn't take away the fun factor.

Amazing Alex is available for iPhone and iPad.

Price: $0.99 (iPhone), $2.99 (iPad), and $0.99 (Android)

Yes, You Can Play Angry Birds With a Real Slingshot

Media_httpimggawkeras_jbwgd

Unless it was created by master builder Joerg Sprave, it's rare for a slingshot to be of any real interest. But even though we're pretty sick of hearing about Angry Birds, this slingshot controller for the game is kind of neat.

It's built around an mbed microcontroller which translates the angle of the slingshot and the force on the elastic to mouse movements. So pinching on the sling and pulling it back is like clicking on the slingshot in the game and dragging your mouse's cursor back.

Angry Birds craze doesn’t seem to stop. The Finnish company Rovio has built an empire around the popular bird-tossing game, selling t-shirts, lunch boxes, speakers and other goodies.
