Dreambox is a vending machine with a built-in 3D printer

Media_httpicdn6digita_bwtji

Detailed on the official Dreambox site, the first 3D printer installed within a vending machine will roll out on the UC Berkeley campus later this month. Since owning a 3D printer is still extremely cost prohibitive for the majority of Americans, the Dreambox gives anyone access to 3D printing technology. Users can connect to the Dreambox site, upload the design of a 3D model and complete the payment process in order to put their design in the project queue. After the item has been completed by the 3D printer, it’s deposited within a storage unit and a text message is sent to the person that placed the order.

The three creators of the Dreambox, David Pastewka, Ricard Berwick and Will Drevno, came up with the idea after noticing the lack of 3D printers on their campus. The 3D printers that were available to the students also came with wait times that could last up to a month.

3D Printing Coming to Vending Machine Near You

Media_httprack3mshcdn_afbnm

If vending machines can dispense beer, pizza and movies, why not 3D-printed objects?

Combining the hyper-local convenience of Redbox with cutting edge technology, Dreambox is a vending machine that aims to fuel the 3D-printing revolution from the bottom up.

Dreambox was created by co-founders David Pastewka, Ricard Berwick and Will Drevno, who all met in a mobile application development class and competition at the University of California, Berkeley. Frustrated by their lack of accessible, on-campus 3D printing options and the two- to four-week lead time for online 3D printing services, the trio came up with the idea for a more ubiquitous option.

“Having an item 3D printed with a Dreambox is as simple as uploading or choosing a design online, clicking the ‘Print’ button and retrieving the item once it’s ready,” the group states in its press kit.

Users can also upload designs via a USB stick at the machine. If they don’t have their own 3D models, customers can select one from a catalog of designs or use one of the many apps that help customize a model. Once an item is selected for printing, it’s sent to the nearest Dreambox and added to the queue.

Google 2012: The Machines Are Getting Smarter

Media_httpreadwriteco_kmdab

Google was full of surprises in 2012. It outdid Apple easily in mobile OS features. It rolled out a whole line of Nexus Android devices that are undeniably top notch. And it launched the Knowledge Graph, a watershed moment between the keyword-searching past of the Web and a future Web that understands whole concepts.

2012 was also the year that Google unified its offerings under a single privacy policy, a move that freaked out lots of people, but which was totally rational from Google's perspective. If we're going to have a data-driven future offering pervasive, free technologies in exchange for better targeting of advertisements, we'll have to accept that companies like Google have an eerily accurate, real-time profile of us.

As if to hammer that point home, Google hired futurist and Singularitarian Ray Kurzweil right before the Holiday break. Looking back at 2012, it looks like Google's brave new world is almost upon us.

30+ Epic Engine Design

Media_httpwwwandysowa_fddcg

Engine Design, we all rely on it, but we don’t always realize it, or see it! Hidden beneath the hood of your car (and many other things like boats, planes, trains, etc.) hides a magnificent engineering marvel known as the engine! We don’t really put much thought into what we rely on to survive but maybe we should! As Designers & Engineers it is important to know how it works if you want to build a better version and make the future better with that product for everyone. It is important to learn the history of such things, and find out how it works because someone else may not have done that and continued with an inferior design and thus held society back.

The Rube Goldberg Machine That Defies the Laws of Physics

Media_httpimggawkeras_pqovi

Taking the Rube Goldberg to a whole new dimension, the wizards (assuming magic plays a big part in this) at 2D House have created this complex chain reaction that seemingly ignores and laughs at the laws of the universe that govern our daily existence.

Balls that roll uphill? Ladder climbing blocks? It boggles the mind, until you get to the end and realize that magnets and optical illusions play a big part in why this Rube Goldberg video is all kinds of awesome.

10 Robots with Very Specific Tasks

Media_http1bpblogspot_hgett

What do we want robots to do for us? The field of robotics is making great leaps in robot abilities, but these abilities come one at a time. We won’t have Rosie from The Jetsons until the various specific tasks are combined into one machine. When that happens, they will take over. But until then, you’ll have to choose the purpose of your robot, and hope it can do that specific task well. Here are some of the most recently-unveiled robots and what they can do.

10 incredible LEGO machines that really work

In our opinion, LEGO is the greatest toy ever made. If you have the skills, you can turn simple LEGO bricks into just about anything you can imagine. As a kid, I used LEGO pieces to make other toys. As an adult, all I want LEGO to do is open beers for me and file my taxes. I've got the first part nailed down, but I'm still working on second.

Pictures: A Rare Look Inside China's Energy Machine

Media_httpimagesnatio_hppcj

China's energy use, production, and ambitions are best captured by superlatives: The country is the world's largest energy consumer, and leading source of greenhouse gas emissions.

To power its tremendous economic growth, China has called on every fuel, every technology. It is the largest producer of coal and its greatest consumer, and yet China has more nuclear reactors under construction than any other nation. Its growing appetite for oil has kept gasoline prices high around the globe. And yet China's commitment to wind and solar power is so outsized that its young industries are now among the largest in the world.

The 10 Coolest Real-Life Robots

Media_httpcdnlcomplex_akqya

We all dream of (and fear) a future ran by machines that can manage our dirty chores, construct buildings, and fight our wars. Truth is we're probably a few centuries away from living the futuristic realm of Deep Space Nine, or better yet, the Jetsons. But recent breakthroughs in the robotics field over the past couple decades have shown us that we're not that far off from sparing with lifelike Rock'em Sock'em robots like Hugh Jackman in his new film: Real Steel...

A group of American computer science and security experts have performed a hack on an e-voting machine similar to ones which will be used on Election Day in 2012.

Voting machines that could be used by up to a quarter of the US electorate on Election Day next year can be hacked, says a group of computer science and security experts at the Vulnerability Assessment Team at Argonne National Laboratory in Illinois. In fact, they’re not only saying it. They’ve done it.

Top 10 Machines in the Outer Space

Media_httpcontentdail_muwgw

If it wasn’t for the billions of dollars we spend on machines, man would never be able to reach the moon and would never even have the right to dream about Mars.

As a standard procedure, we always send machines first to bring back data to earth about whatever strange land we want to study. Through the years, some of these machines have become as popular as the people who rode them.

Working on your perfect pitch? You may not have to look further than your iPhone or iPad.
Apple filed a patent that will turn its mobile devices into karaoke machines, the Telegraph reports.
It can also be used to help singers train their voices.
The iPod will evaluate a person's singing, amplifying their efforts with "a concert hall effect" when they are on hitting the right notes, while exaggerating off-pitch notes.
