As we’ve already talked before, we are not as smart as we tell ourselves we are. 98% of us would definitely grab the shiniest product on a supermarket shelf, but not the one with the best characteristics, wouldn’t you? So, from a marketing standpoint it is much more expensive having a good product in a lame package (and not selling it) than spending money on a good packaging designer.
Hmm, being a "good product in a lame package" is effective if you are already an established product. But if you are a starting product, you can't afford to use that technique because you'll be left behind by other competitors. For new products, their best way to be recognized is to establish themselves to their target market through quality product and presentable product presentation.
