Apple Starting Production on Next iPhone This Quarter

Media_httprack3mshcdn_gsqfu

Apple reportedly plans on starting production on its newest iPhone this quarter.

According to the Wall Street Journal, the phone will look and feel similar to Apple’s iPhone 5, with small spec bumps under the hood. The Journal also claims Apple is working on a lower-cost iPhone, made of a different — perhaps colored — material than the current iPhone.

WSJ sources claim that the next phone will launch this summer. The iPhone 5 launched in September of 2012, which would put the next phone’s launch right around the one-year mark for that device.

Zuck On Facebook’s Mobile Experience: It Gets Better (But We Probably Won’t Make Our Own Phone)

zuckerbergphone

Anyone who has used Facebook on a smartphone or tablet knows that the social network still has a ways to go when it comes to nailing the mobile experience. Turns out that Mark Zuckerberg is well aware of this — and on the company’s Q2 2012 earnings call with investors and analysts this afternoon, he vowed that his team is on it.

Zuckerberg said:

“Facebook is the most used app on basically every mobile platform. So when we think about what we want to do right now, we want to increase the depth of experience in addition to just growing users. We want to not just have applications that people use, but also be deeply integrated into these systems as much as possible, and develop an ecosystem where other apps can be built on top of Facebook.”

Will The Microsoft Surface Tablet Redefine Mobile Computing?

Media_httptctechcrunc_jwrau

Microsoft just took the wraps off the all new Microsoft Surface. Even though the name is familiar this is an entirely new product. Simply put, the Surface is a Windows 8 tablet. But it seems so much more. In fact, perhaps I’m still a little drunk on Microsoft Kool-Aid, but the Surface seems like the next generation of mobile computing. While Surface might not kill the iPad, it might revive Microsoft.

To be clear, the Surface is Microsoft’s hardware. This is a not a Dell or HP tablet running Microsoft’s software. Microsoft clearly designed this tablet to best showcase Windows 8. The tablet itself seems fantastic. Compared to the iPad, it’s a bit utilitarian with hard lines, full size I/O ports, and heat vents. But it also seems like a serious tablet rather than a plaything.
