"I try to concentrate on the humble, the simple, and the often-overlooked subject. I like to shoot in nature, and I like to shoot macro, because I feel like all we really need to know can be found in the tiny corners of life. I also like nature photography because it doesn’t seem so confined to a particular place. I hope that people who look at my photos can find something as small and as fascinating in their environment as I can find in mine. I want people to know that inspiring things don’t have to be big. There is inspiration everywhere. There is comfort everywhere.
For me, my photography is spiritual and philosophical, but I also find it very therapeutic. I use it as a break from the challenges of the day-to-day, and I hope it provides that escape for others. I shoot entirely on film, and almost exclusively on the Olympus OM system. My favorite lens is my Zuiko macro. Film allows for a certain magic and a certain charm that I think is beneficial to nature and the microcosm of macro photography. I prefer shallow focus not out of a lust for bokeh, but rather in order to highlight certain aspects of the scene I am photographing. I prefer feeling to technical perfection. I always hope my work makes people think." ~ Jesse Ray
