With over 8 million people without power throughout the east coast and New York City dark below 40th st. people are getting antsy for some electricity...especially for their phones.

That is where clever New York startup Moxy comes in. The company provides cell phone charging stations that also distribute wi-fi. As the storm settled, but the power not so much, the company got an interesting offer from Chase. Come provide your stations in one of our branches on the border with the powerless.

The move is a great act of kindness and terrific marketing. We stumbled across them as we wandered the dark city yesterday. Speaking with the people using the service and the people providing the service gave an interesting insight into life during Sandy and its aftermath.

How to Choose a Charity

Media_httpwwwmintcomb_pchvg

One of my financial goals is to build charity into my annual budget. Last year, as of mid-December, I had not given a penny to the less fortunate—not even a coin dropped into one of those convenience store Lucite boxes adorned with a picture of a child.

25 Glorious Charity and Non-Profit Web Designs

Media_httpwebtoolfeed_zqidi

Some say money can’t buy you happiness, but there is a loophole. What if you spend money to help somebody? Knowing that you helped another soul for the better is probably on of the best feelings in the world. Recently I’ve watched many TED videos about happiness.

Media_httpspeckyboyco_thblr

A charity or cause may not need the sleek sales pages of a business on the web, but a poorly designed one could still mean the difference between helping people or failing to do so. Why Designers Should Do Volunteer Projects

Media_httpcdndesignmo_hpjjh

As designers, it isn’t often that we get to do something good for the community with our talents. Taking on one charity project a year doesn’t have to eat up a lot of time and it can benefit you in many ways, aside from that warm and fuzzy feeling you get from helping others. Even if you are a Grinch who doesn’t want to help anyone, I’m still going to convince you to work for free because not only does it help the less fortunate, there are a ton of benefits for you as well.

Apple hands out refurbished iPad 1 units to the thousands of members teaching for Teach for America.
