When I’m in need of some design inspiration, one of my favorite things to do is look through creative album artwork. Most design work has to fit a particular brief – client work, for example, always has to match a brand identity, and web design needs to be suited for the screen – but album artwork has no constraints. It’s also completely subjective and personal – you could ask 1,000 designers to create a cover for a particular album, and you’d get 1,000 unique, completely different designs back. Album artwork is often so creative and different to most other design work that it can be refreshing and inspiring.

The predominant album covers that you will see in stores are based on photographs, having a photo of the artist and a plain background, putting the spotlight on him, but the art of album covers doesn’t refer to that type of cover. Instead, it is about cover designs which actually have something artistic in them, an illustration, whether it’s drawn or vectorized, a photo manipulation or a 3d model.

This article features album cover design examples and ideas from recently launched albums, as well as from a few older ones. The article is not trying to showcase a top of the most sold albums or most popular, instead its only purpose is to provide inspiration for the people who want to be album cover designers and are seeking examples of modern album art.

As a huge music fan, I’m somewhat of a hoarder of old vinyl and CDs. I have a room in my apartment which is dedicated to my music collection, and I have no shame in saying that they are my prized possessions. But on the same token, I am not completely adverse to digital formats. Sure, you get a great sound quality a lot of the time, but one thing you don’t get with digital is the artwork.
