Book Publishing 101: What Publishers are Looking For

Everyone — and I mean everyone — is working on a book. For some, it's just a spark of an idea that hasn't quite made it to paper; for others, it's thousands of words socked away in a drawer or saved on an old laptop. Either way, the same question is bound to come up eventually: What does it take to get this thing published?

There is no easy way to get published and become a successful author. I can safely say this after years of reading submissions for a literary agency and a Big Six publisher (including everything from amazing books that bombed to titles I hated but everyone else in the world loved). Writing books is a weird, long haul, but — thankfully! — there are a few things you can do to help you on your journey. Here's the advice that I give every aspiring author.

Twitter Cofounders Unveil Their Newest Project, An Online Publishing Platform Called Medium

Evan Williams and Biz Stone are looking to change the way we think of online publishing yet again.

On Tuesday, the Twitter cofounders lifted the curtain on their latest top secret project, a new online publishing tool called Medium. Williams tweeted out a "sneak peak" of the project and wrote that, "The @medium team is, pound for pound, the best I've ever worked with, bar none."

Medium provides users with beautifully designed platform for sharing and discovering blog posts and pictures. And yes, these posts can be longer than 140 characters.

Amazon to work directly with authors, bypass publishers

When costs are high and demand is low, it’s time to cut out the middle man.

That seems to be what Amazon is doing in their latest move to expand both their reach and influence as they will be publishing 122 books this fall directly from the writers’ works. They’re publishing program has been available for some time but this is the first time that they are actually threatening to do something with it.
