Harvard, MIT partner to offer free online courses

Harvard University's prestige makes the plan a significant development, according to one expert. (Kelvin Ma, Bloomberg / June 21, 2011)

In a move that heightened competition in online education and brought more prestige to the still-fledgling field, Harvard University and MIT announced a partnership Wednesday to offer the public mainly free Internet classes.

Harvard and MIT are each donating $30 million to create a nonprofit organization, to be called "edX" that will develop an Internet platform for the classes and design new ways to teach and learn with technology, according to the two Cambridge, Mass., schools. They will join an emerging arena in which other research universities, Stanford among them, and private ventures around the world are trying to stake out territory.

MIT And Harvard Announce edX : The Best Education Is Now Available To You Online [Video]

 

Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) today announced edX, a transformational new partnership in online education. Through edX, the two institutions will collaborate to enhance campus-based teaching and learning and build a global community of online learners. EdX will build on both universities’ experience in offering online instructional content. The technological platform recently established by MITx, which will serve as the foundation for the new learning system, was designed to offer online versions of MIT courses featuring video lesson segments, embedded quizzes, immediate feedback, student-ranked questions and answers, online laboratories, and student paced learning. Certificates of mastery will be available for those motivated and able to demonstrate their knowledge of the course material.

Video: Zuckerberg returns to Harvard to recruit

In 2004, Facebook creator Mark Zuckerberg left Harvard University as a dropout with a novel idea. Monday, he returned with a triumphant message: He's hiring. It was his first official visit to Harvard since he left for Silicon Valley.
