The Next Xbox Will Be Announced May 21

Microsoft just announced that it's going to fill us in on the next Xbox, alias Durango, alias Nextbox, on May 21st. The event will take place at Microsoft's home base in Redmond, Washington, but streamed on Spike TV. Here's what we can expect.

Xbox 720 unveiling pushed back to May 21, possibly due to always-on DRM snafu

The internet is up in arms over rumors that the next Xbox console will require an always-on connection. Imaginations are running wild, and we haven’t heard any official announcements from Microsoft. Unfortunately, it looks like we’ll be waiting even longer than we once thought. While the original plan was to announce the Xbox 360′s successor later this month, it now looks like it will be unveiled on May 21. Is the event being pushed back to give Microsoft time to remove the always-on DRM that is rumored to be employed by the Xbox 720?

What Microsoft's next Xbox needs to do to keep up with the PS4
Sony’s PlayStation 4 is officially a real thing now, and while we might not know what it looks like yet – expect a shiny, black box – we know enough to have a general sense of the direction that the next-gen is headed in. As important as improved technical bells and whistles are, the big next-gen push highlighted in Sony’s presentation is on ease of use and accessibility. The PS4 will significantly enhance its social presence, with community-oriented features designed to foster increased brand loyalty. Sony’s Gaikai acquisition also adds value to the new platform, by way of remote play capabilities and promised future support for legacy titles on the non-backwards compatible consoles all through streaming capabilities.
While technically Nintendo was the first to enter the next-gen fray, Sony was first out of the gate for next-gen hardware announcements in 2013. This leaves Microsoft in a position of having to announce an Xbox 360 successor that acknowledges, however indirectly, the competition on some level. The NextBox will carry its own personality, of course, but the expectation is that many of the new features will compete with what’s out there. With April 2013 looking more and more likely as the announcement window for Microsoft’s next game console, we’re taking a moment today to consider what we can expect to hear once all is revealed.

Xbox 720 rumored to have its own Siri, unlock Kinect’s true potential

As we approach Microsoft and Sony announcements for their next generation game consoles, the rumor mill is kicking into high gear. The latest rumor has the next Xbox, codenamed Durango, performing natural language recognition in a similar way to Apple’s Siri. While the Xbox 360 currently has some voice recognition through the Kinect, it’s limited in usefulness by how restrictive the actual voice controls are currently implemented.
After the rise of motion controls in the last generation, it’s clear that the consoles aren’t just going to compete on performance anymore. Both Nintendo and Sony have bet on touch screens to different extents, so moving the SmartGlass technology forward isn’t going to be enough of a distinguishing feature for the next generation Microsoft hardware. While the Xbox 360 is currently the king of consoles in the US, it’s not doing nearly as well in the rest of the world. It’s going to need a hook of some sort, and this voice functionality just might be a big part of what Microsoft has up its sleeves.

Next Xbox Will Reportedly Have Siri-Style Natural Language Input

One of the most-rumored features of the mythical Apple television set is Siri integration that would allow you to naturally ask questions and issue commands to your TV, but Microsoft may beat Apple to the punch, if a new report from The Verge is accurate. Microsoft already has some voice features built into the current generation Xbox, but the next-gen console will get much-improved abilities including natural language processing powers, the report claims.
New voice-based abilities include the option to wake the new Xbox from sleep mode with an “Xbox on” command, as well as a system that can use Kinect to detect people in the room and offer up multiplayer game suggestions. Users can also query the new Xbox to ask it what their friends are currently playing, tell it to pick up playing a movie where it was last left off and more. The new system will also be much better at vocalizing responses to voice-based user input, according to the report, which should make the overall experience feel much more like an ordinary conversation.

Xbox 720 Already Lowering Expectations

Start figuring your gaming budget for 2013, because the clock is ticking down to the Xbox 720's debut at the Electronic Entertainment Expo next June. Microsoft's official Xbox blogger Major Nelson has all but officially confirmed this by posting an E3 countdown to his site with a terse three words: "And it's on…"
Tech spec rumors have already started swimming about the Xbox 720's potential 8 GB of memory and a price peg at a possible $299 for next year's holiday season. And it goes beyond the Xbox: speculation about Sony's next move concerning the PlayStation 4 are also skyrocketing now.

Some call it Durango, some call it Loop; however, we would just stick with plain ole progression of numbers by calling Microsoft's next generation console: Xbox 720. Now in this regard, we did harp about how the console gaming industry is going through a favorable phase, with figures alluding to a $34.7 billion market by end of 2012. And, what's better than to ride upon this commercial crest by releasing a state-of-the-art console system. Well, if credible rumors are anything to go by, then Microsoft will be doing that by Christmas of next year. And, even if that's a long time off (especially for an ardent gamer), we did salvage some foreseeable features expected from this futuristic device.
