Google arms itself in smart phone wars

Media_httpbetaimagest_gbxln

After years of fighting the smart phone wars by proxy, Google (GOOG-Q549.12-14.65-2.60%) is arming itself with an arsenal of patents and stepping directly onto the battlefield.

In what will be the largest acquisition in company history, the web search giant is buying Motorola Mobility (MMI-N38.3013.8356.52%) for $12.5-billion (U.S.), or a 63 per cent premium over the company's Friday closing share price. The purchase is aimed at solving several serious problems Google is facing in the smart phone industry, where its Android operating system is the most popular platform but is fragmented over almost 40 different device manufacturers.
