You can't imagine ever getting scammed. Besides being a diligent Internet user who knows the ins and outs of web terrain, you have an email account that siphons all harmful messages into a neat little folder, which you never even check. So you're completely safe, right?

Think again.

Scam emails and viruses can fall through the cracks every now and then, and when they do, be ready. Studies show that email scams target people who are likely to fall for something more than once. You don't want to be lumped into that group.

Scammers are getting smarter these days, too. It's not just that one "Nigerian prince" from years ago — there's a whole royal family of scammers out there.

Here's a list of 10 scam indicators you should watch out for when going through your inbox. Keep your guard up and you'll have nothing to worry about.

9 Clues That Your New Freelancing Gig May Actually Be a Scam

When I began freelancing, one of the things I was most afraid of was failing victim to a work-from-home scam. As a result, I was super cautious. I checked and double-checked every potential client carefully. If something didn’t seem right, I didn’t pursue it.

I don’t think that was a mistake.

Even though freelancing is much more commonplace that it was ten years ago, the scammers are still out there. Freelancers still need to be careful.

This announcement was heard less frequently beginning in 1988, when smoking was banned on all domestic flights of two hours or less. Ten years later smoking was verboten on all domestic flights, and by 2000 smoking on any U.S. airline was banned by federal law.

Fake Instagram Android App Contains malware

There's a phony version of Instagram for Android floating around containing malware that can access your text messages, according to security research firm Sophos.

TNW picked up the Sophos report.

Sophos says the fake Instagram app is available on a few websites, including one based in Russia.

The app pretends to be a fully-functional version of Instagram, but doesn't always connect to the photo-sharing service's network.

The best way to protect yourself from accidentally downloading the fake Instagram app is to only use the official Google Play market on your phone.

Over 600,000 Macs infected with Flashback Trojan - Thanks to Java

Two months ago, a new variant of the Flashback Trojan started exploiting a security hole in Java to silently infect Mac OS X machines. Apple has since patched Java, but this was only yesterday. As of today, more than 600,000 Macs are currently infected with the Flashback Trojan, which steals your user names and passwords to popular websites by monitoring your network traffic.
