Korean artist Jaehyo Lee creates unique three-dimensional decorative pieces from assembly of natural materials, such as wood pieces, branches, leaves, bolts, and nails by sculpting, grinding and refining them into geometrical shapes – mesmerizing spheres, hemispheres, or cylinders.
Based in Ireland, Steve Simpson is a freelance illustrator/designer working in the areas packaging design, illustration and art for children’s books. Steve recently had a solo show at the Copper House Gallery in Dublin and has regularly had work exhibited in London, LA & New York. He was also a main stage speaker at the 2012 OFFSET creative conference in the Grand Canal Theatre, Dublin. Steve has won numerous international awards for both his packaging design and illustration inc. gold at the AOI’s images awards.
Steve takes an organic approach to his projects, blending the disciplines of design and illustration. He spends a great deal of time on construction, shape and problem solving at the pencil stage. Continuously re-drawing until a balance of aesthetics, key brief considerations and client satisfaction have been realized. Approved pencils are then worked up in Photoshop using a limited palette of carefully chosen colors. Steve considers vintage illustration and packaging to be a huge influence on his work particularly the works of Jim Flora, Mary Blair and Ed Emberly. He particularly enjoys combing design for print with illustration and looks forward to further exploration of the world of packaging design.
The past few weeks have been all about raising awareness for Romania, the home country of the Pixel77 team (the people behind the entire Brainik Network, to be more exact). I’ve shown you guys some interesting facts in this “Get to Know Romania” article and my colleague Cristina recently posted a showcase of inspiring portrait photography made by 4 awesome Romanian artists that went viral. So I thought I’d put her work to the test and see if I can do the same with the artwork of the one, the only – Dan Cretu. So I asked nicely and he was kind enough to offer me an interview. Let’s meet Dan!
