The Wonderful World of Steampunk

Media_httpinspiration_gizud

What is steampunk? In reality describing this term is a difficult thing to do. New ideas are always being mixed in, nonetheless I will try my best to answer it.

Starting out as a subset of cyberpunk, steampunk is a sci-fi genre featuring steam-powered machinery inspired by the Industrial Revolution in 19th century America. This re-imagined phenomenon draws upon the wealth of historical technology and scientific fantasies of the Victorian and Edwardian periods. The main point is to reinvent modern technology, gadgets, architecture, vehicles, and fashion as the people of that era might have envisioned them.

Using Jules Verne, Philip Pullman, Scott Westerfeld, China Miéville, and H. G. Wells as inspiration, people who follow this trend try to envision an alternate universe where steampunk is the norm. This retro-futuristic culture tends to be dark, grim, and features dystopian themes. Steampunk may also incorporate additional elements from the genres of fantasy, horror, historical fiction, alternate history, or other branches of speculative fiction. It continues to grow into a beast of its own, making it a hybrid genre.
